8/04 – 8/08 Masters of Science Candidate
State University of New York, College of Environmental Science
Thesis title: Above and Below Ground Characteristics of Remnant and Restored Wetlands of Central New York with an Emphasis on Mycorrhizal Ecology
Developed protocols, organized data collection, and executed all aspects of research projects. Measured species richness of wetland plants and associated mycorrhizal fungi. Determined percent mycorrhizal colonization and temporal variation in plant and fungal species of restored and undisturbed wetland habitats. Determined differences in research sites through chemical analysis of soil. Used minitab, SAS, PC ORD for data analysis and scientific conclusions. Facilitated undergraduate education in thesis project.
6/00 – 8/04 Wetland Botanist
City of Eugene, Oregon Department of Parks and Open Spaces
Lead Botanist on crew for upland prairie restoration projects. Field botanist for wetland restoration crew. Carried out wetland maintenance, plant population monitoring, mapping and surveying using G.P.S. and G.I.S software and equipment. Collected and processed seed from native plants for germination in restoration areas. Maintained a native plant seed bank, keeping a field log and utilizing excel to compile and analyze seed database. Facilitated scientific collection of species for Kew Royal Botanical Gardens Seed Bank. Educated and worked with volunteers, interns and at-risk youth.
4/03 – 9/03 Research Assistant
Roy Lab, University of Oregon
Assisted in genetic and reproductive analysis of upland prairie grasses for restoration purposes. Analyzed plant isozymes through electrophoresis. Collected field data in pollination and grow out experiments for research on plant mating systems and outbreeding depression. Field assistance in Gothic, Colorado throughout the summer researching the hybridization of Castellija sp.
