Experience

Engineer Associate II, Center for Applied Energy Research, U. of Kentucky 12/2008-present

• Led the corrosion team and project management of corrosion project

• Material selection for scrubber, stripper, heat exchanger, reboiler and corrosion/erosion prevention in aqueous CO2 corrosion encountered in CO2 capture and natural gas separation

• Development of Ni and Al based coatings on carbon steel by powder metallurgy/pack cementation of aluminum powder and electroplating to reduce corrosion. It reduced corrosion rate over 30 times than unprotected carbon steels.

• Guided the less experienced engineers and co-op students.

• Close collaborated/interacted with industrial companies; provided consultation and wrote technical reports and progress

• Designed/built the corrosion setup including the electrochemical corrosion test system and the immersion test reactor

• Corrosion behavior of carbon steels (A106 and A516) and stainless steels (304, 316, 317LMN, duplex 2205) in aqueous amine with carbon dioxide

• Electrochemical techniques: potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization resistance, Tafel, cyclic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

• Immersion tests of coupons to evaluate corrosion by weight loss according to ASTM standards.

• Metallurgical/microstructural and failure analysis of corroded samples by XRD, SEM/EDS, optical microscope, XPS.

Materials Engineer, Continuous Welded/Seamless Rail Co., Harbin, China, 09/1996-08/2001

• Worked with variety of steels (Q235, 60Si2Mn(Cr), U71Mn) and processing (hot forming, cold punch, quench, tempering, extrusion, welding)

• Provided technical support to manufacturing operations and prepared technical reports; quality control of manufacturing processes

• Responsible for ensuring that Metallurgical Lab and heat treat area were operating according to documented processes and worked to improve processes to improve quality and productivity.

• Control heat treatment processes of spring steels and hot and cold forming techniques for steel fasteners

• Hands-on experience in various welding processes: flash welding, gas pressure welding, and thermite welding

• Metallographic analysis and mechanical testing of steel products

• Destructive and non-destructive failure analysis of welded rail joints and resilient products and adjusted and optimized manufacturing process based on analysis results

Other Experience

Research Fellow, Chem. & Mater. Engineering, U. of Kentucky 09/2004-11/2008

• Deposition of alloy thin films by DC and RF magnetron co-sputtering

• Optimization of thin film deposition processes by adjusting pressure, power and substrate conditions

• Microstructural and surface analysis of thin films by XRD, SEM, EDS, AFM and XPS

• Effects of microstructure on biaxial stress, elastic modulus, strength and hardness of nanoporous gold by wafer curvature and microindentation

• Clean room techniques: thin film deposition; spin-coating, photolithography, and etching

Research Fellow, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China 09/2001-08/2004

• Development of NiCrAl superalloys for high temperature and aircraft applications

• Microstructural and Mechanical testing and fracture analysis of Ni-based superalloys

• Powder compaction, hot-pressing and sintering of structural ceramics
