RESEARCH SUMMARY

“SYNTHESIS OF LOW BAND GAP CROSS CONJUGATED POLYMERS - FUSED RING DONOR ACCEPTOR SYSTEMS”.

The lightness of weight, processability, and corrosion resistance of conjugated organic polymers have been the drive to replace a number of metal applications and to produce novel materials. The design of zero-approaching band gap polymers is important in order to achieve intrinsic conductivity in these materials. In order to minimize the band gap, bond-length alternation (BLA) along the main chain has to be as small as possible. Minimization of the BLA can be achieved through two pathways: (i) fused ring systems and (ii) alternation of electron-donors and -acceptors in the main chain. Using the two strategies, 4,6-Di(2-thienyl)thieno[3,4-b]imidazole derivatives were synthesized and polymerized into soluble conjugated polymers with band gaps around 1.63-1.65 eV, which is between that of poly(5,7-Di(2-thienyl)thieno[3,4-b]benzene)andpoly(5,7-Di(2-thienyl)thieno[3,4-b]pyrazine). These polymers and oligomers were structurally characterized by NMR, FT-IR, GPC, Mass, HR-MS, elemental analysis. The electronic and optical properties were studied by solution and solid-state UV/Vis absorption, emission spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The effect of symmetry on the properties of the molecules and fabrication of the polymers into photovoltaic devices was studied as well.
