PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
=================================================================
Network Engines, Inc. - Canton, MA
2007 to 2009
(Leading provider of application deployment platforms,
appliances and services for OEMs, ISVs and service providers;
$190 million in annual revenue)
Investigated and proposed product and service offerings which
have significantly increased new customer acquisition, existing
customer retention and profit margin.
Chief Architect – Advanced Technology Group
Hired to work with CTO and other members of the executive team
on investigating new and emerging technologies such as SaaS,
distributed computing, and cloud computing with the goal of
transitioning company from an integrator business model to a
solution-based service provider. Developed proofs of concept and
presented proofs to key customers and at conferences and trade
shows. Provided guidance to software and hardware engineering to
create appropriate technical solutions to meet customer and
business needs. Led and mentored 5-8 software, release and QA
engineers to champion adoption of open source technologies.
-> Created proofs of concept around a multi-platform strategy,
multi appliance console, and SaaS using a wide range of
technologies (C/C++, Apache, Lighttpd, Php, Python, HTML,
CSS, Ajax, XML, HTTP, SSL and MySQL) on both Linux and Windows
platforms. These proofs of concepts have resulted in: (1) a
ported solution to Linux and (2) a multi-appliance console, which
has enabled the acquisition of new customers along with
recognition in Gartner's 'Cool Vendors in Infrastructure
Appliances', 2008 report.
-> Researched and recommended creation of a multi-platform
product to capture customers using Linux. Established the
strategy and technologies and worked with/mentored engineers on
using Open Source. Conducted technical due diligence around an
OEM partnership with rPath, which was approved and signed.
Company secured 5-8 new customers immediately as a result.
-> Designed and developed the SaaS server component for product
updates, which provides 24x7 support for globally distributed
customer appliances. The update server integrates with the
corporate back office using DTS, SSIS, and ODBC to provide
proactive support for appliances as they are shipped.
Principal Technology Group, Inc. - Burlington, MA
2004 to 2007
(Software engineering consulting firm)
Founder / Principal Consultant
Launched software engineering consulting firm providing software
engineering services to small and medium software companies or
enterprise customers who had ongoing software development
projects. Interfaced directly with customers to establish and
refine project requirements and deliverables, as well as
coordinate and participate in the development process. Managed
and coordinated all phases of software development, including
roadmap planning, geographically distributed development,
project planning, scheduling, resource tracking and risk
analysis. Select client projects include:
-> Established strategic partnership with Hewlett Packard to
provide software engineering services for HP's OpenVMS customers
running on the VAX, Alpha and Itanium platforms. Services
included development, porting and migration, along with support,
of OpenVMS products and applications. Partnership resulted in an
~20% faster time to completion and market for OpenVMS customers.
-> Established and managed offshore development partnerships
in India to develop and maintain web applications using Tomcat,
JSP, PHP, Perl, and MySQL on Linux and Windows platforms for 3
companies: National Traffic Consultants, Global Awakening, and
Cherry Planet.
-> Worked with a development team at Oracle to support the Oracle
10G2 build, development and QA groups in a large Tru64 Unix and
OpenVMS Alpha/Itanium cluster. Support was provided by developing
web-based applications to integrate with the Oracle database back
end, allowing Oracle to more effectively manage and control their
build environment. Developed, maintained and enhanced virtual
porting environment (VPE) written in C/C++, PHP, Java & PL/SQL.
-> Contracted by Teradyne to manage the ongoing development and
maintenance of their $100 million in-house developed MRP business
application product. Led 5-member onsite and offshore team of
developers and QA analysts on gathering and implementing business
requirements and translating those requirements into project and
functional specs that would then be developed by the offshore
team using COBOL, Visual Basic, Oracle Forms, PL/SQL and Oracle
DB. Implemented major enhancements to facilitate international
movement of inventory for sale, storage and repair.
-> Also at Teradyne: Planned and assisted in the implementation
of BMC's Control-M job scheduling product to replace existing
legacy implementations across multiple platforms. Determined
feasibility of using Control-M in the MRP environment and put
together an implementation plan for the onshore/offshore team to
implement the product. Completed implementation with no business
interruption.
Digital Equipment Corp. (acquired by Compaq which was acquired
by HP) - Nashua, NH
1995 to 2005
(Computer manufacturers)
Software Engineer (Contractor)
Provided engineering support for the base operating system, from
a development/enhancement and bug fixing standpoint with the
goal of enhancing the current product set, leveraging existing
customer/partner relationships and garnering new customers/
partners. Worked on OpenVMS Mail rewrite team and performed bug
fixing for DCL and DCL utilities. All projects required extensive
use of C, as well as Posix and kernel multi-threading technology.
Project highlights include:
-> On loan to Oracle Corp. in 2002.
* Worked as an individual contributor in porting Oracle CDD
from VAX to Alpha & IA64 architectures.
* Member of team porting Oracle Rdb & SQL from Alpha to
IA64 architecture developing primarily in C/C++, Bliss
and Macro Assembler.
-> Worked on Extended File Support (XFS) team to implement On-
Disk-Structure 5 (ODS-5) and provide support for Backup, DCL, and
DCL utilities. Worked at the volume file system level to extend
the file name size throughout the entire operating system. Wrote
the components at the OS level. Provided extended file name
support from 78 byte file name size to an 8k file name size.
-> Member of Secure Web Server (SWS) team tasked with porting
core Apache components, as well as Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
technology. Worked as an individual contributor to port the
Apache 2.0 and PHP 4.3 to the OpenVMS platform. Process required
extensive work in C/C++ and included interaction with the Apache
Software Foundation (ASF), as well as other open source projects.
-> Individual contributor on assignment to port the MIT Kerberos
V5 client and server software and GSS API to OpenVMS. This
enabled the Swiss stock exchange (a key DEC customer) to leave
their Solaris platform for an OpenVMS platform, which reduced the
support and maintenance costs required in their multi-platform
environment.
-> In partnership with a peer engineer, enhanced and supported
OpenVMS Registry client and server software in support of the
Microsoft partnership for extending Windows operability across
multiple platforms.
