UNISYS CORPORATION, Malvern, PA

Director, Engineering Operations & Planning (1998 – 2009)

Defined/directed operations, policies, procedures and guidelines for large engineering organization of 1100+.

* Directed operational systems and applications, processes and policies supporting all corporate world-wide engineering, including C-level reporting, information flow and product and operational business plans.

* Provided senior executive team with plans supporting corporate R&D annual budgets from $300M to $800M. Defined and deployed tools and procedures for engineering-wide product portfolio, which aligned with corporate goals and strategies, and consistently delivered on-time and low cost computer products and solutions.

* Developed tooling, procedures and metrics for defining and measuring deliverable commitments by the organization. Increased overall organizational performance by 25%+.

* Developed, tracked and maintained extensive employee skills database (with HR). This ensured that specific skills were available for all projects. It also improved management analysis of skill capabilities and development planning, by redirecting training plans to meet skill requirements and staffing needs.

* Identified opportunity for engineering to provide outside services (such as custom development for special client configurations and system performance analysis), to other business units and external clients, without impacting internal commitments, off-setting annual R&D expenses between $3M and $17M annually.

* Collaborated with engineering executives to identify development work that could be performed offshore in India and China. Supported engineering executive staff to guide transition of diverse engineering organizations and geographical locations into a cohesive operation. Provided ad hoc data analysis and reports to senior executives.

* Formed/led cross-functional team that consolidated dispersed/independent computer engineering disciplines, practices, policies, concepts and supporting tools across corporation. Eliminated redundancies, closed 7 manufacturing plants and enabled sharing of all activities, resulting in costs savings of $500M annually.

* Developed a common set of commodity codes for the corporation and executed a transition plan for all organizations to reduce parts inventory and multiple suppliers/vendors. Worked with all engineering, manufacturing and procurement functions resulting in a 50% reduction in vendors and $100M in costs.

* Led a team from engineering, manufacturing and Corporate IT organizations to define, design and develop a centralized engineering database for the corporation. This enabled various disciplines to globally share information regarding the common design of components, systems and manufactured modules.

* Defined, designed and deployed planning tool to assist senior engineering management in R&D planning and tracking. Was 1st in-house development of client/server architecture utilizing PC/Windows/MS Office client communicating with Unix/Oracle database server over LANs/WANs. Eventually migrated to distributed database architecture to reduce performance issues. System globally collected, formatted information and presented real time the R&D investment, schedules and content of all engineering programs within a $1.2 billion R&D budget, creating a complete annual product portfolio.

* Guided entire systems integration/test of computer hardware and system software and release of qualified system software to manufacturing for distribution to customers. Eliminated errors in system configuration management, reducing customer complaints by 25%.

SPERRY CORPORATION, Blue Bell, PA

Computer Technician-Programmer-Supervisor-Manager, Diagnostic Software
