To Whom It May Concern:

I am pleased to write this letter of recommendation for Mr. Jamie White. Jamie was a student in my Honors Seminar, Community and University, in the spring 2008 semester and distinguished himself in that class. On the basis of my experience with him I recommend him to you highly.

In a class of bright people (all Honors students) Jamie was a leader in every way. His willingness to go beyond what was expected set him apart and made him a resource for the entire class. For example, to further the process of understanding needs in the community where I had challenged my class to work (Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood), Jamie was the lone member of the class to attend a Business Development Committee meeting of the Local Development Company. When it became important to insure that the class’s efforts to restore portions of the South Side Park were in line with community priorities, he was one of two students who made the presentation. When rebuilding a major trail in the park emerged as a priority, Jamie was one of two students in the class who took a Saturday morning to walk the trails in the park with an expert on trail stabilization to learn what needed to be done and how to do it. When mapping of the trails in the park emerged as another priority, Jamie was the lone member of the class who mastered using the GPS system to do it.

When I asked if any students in the class would be interested in collaborating to prepare and make an invited presentation on our course at the annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council in San Antonio, Texas, the semester after the class was held, Jamie was one of four students who volunteered, then took the time to meet several times to prepare the presentation and the time from his normal schoolwork to participate in the conference.

Beyond Jamie’s initiative to take leadership in the class, his academic accomplishments were also outstanding. His writing in this writing-intensive class was strong, and his determination to improve his writing stronger. He made substantial contributions to each of the group writing assignments, the community research report, the project proposal, and project report.

To summarize, Jamie is smart, curious, and versatile, with broad interests and an ability to lead. He is anxious to learn new things and he is willing to go outside his comfort zone when the work or the success of the group requires it. For all these reasons I recommend him to you highly.

Sincerely,

G. Evan Stoddard, Ph.D.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am pleased to recommend Jamie White to you and to support his application for a position with your firm. I have known Jamie for about two years as a member of the Duquesne University Honors College. While I have not had the pleasure of having him as a student in class, other contacts have given me the opportunity to observe characteristics which will stand him in good stead in the future. I am certain that Jamie has the intellectual and personal qualities necessary to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of any position for which he applies.

Jamie entered the University as a member of the incoming class of the Duquesne University Honors College in the fall of 2005. Membership in this group is open only to the most academically talented and motivated students on campus. Jamie met the College’s three membership requirements: a minimum score of 1300 on the reading and mathematics sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (fully 200 points above the SAT score for the class as a whole), a minimum grade point average in high school of 3.5, and a ranking in the top 10 percent of his high school graduating class. Throughout his undergraduate academic career Jamie demonstrated that our trust in his academic abilities was not misplaced. He graduated summa cum laude (cumulative grade point average of 3.95) from Duquesne with a major in music technology and a minor in mathematics.

I got to know Jamie directly in the fall of 2008 when he and three other Honors College students presented a session on service learning and honors education at the annual conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council, the national organization of honors programs and colleges. The students drew upon their work in Dr. Evan Stoddard’s Community and University course in the spring of 2008. The students talked about their experiences organizing and carrying out their class project to revitalize a disused park in Pittsburgh’s South Side community. They also showed how the course and its service learning component had both enhanced and challenged their academic abilities. It was an outstanding presentation, and had a large attendance for a student presentation at the NCHC conference. Jamie contributed substantially to the success of this group effort.

In watching this group work to plan and put together its presentation, I saw Jamie demonstrate a number of characteristics that would be necessary and beneficial for his future.

He demonstrated a strong attention to detail. This was something that Jamie and the group showed throughout the process. They worked hard to make sure that their presentation matched the images they chose to illustrate their talk and to refine their presentation to make sure that it was intelligible to people from outside the Pittsburgh area. In preparing this presentation, each student was responsible for one particular section they planned what information to present, how to present it in an interesting and coherent way, and what photographs of the class’s work best illustrated the points being made. The group meetings reacted to the individual presentation and made suggestions for improvements. Jamie was always ready with his part of the show. With his minor in mathematics and strong work background in computer labs at the University, Jamie has computer skills of a very high order.

Thank you for your time and attention. I urge you to give Jamie White’s application all possible consideration and hope to hear that you have acted favorably upon it. If you have any questions about the information contained in this recommendation, please feel free to contact me, either by email (h0t9h8@r.postjobfree.com) or by telephone (X4178).

Most sincerely,

Michael Cahall, Ph.D.
