Spring 2007: Co-developed a model Hydrogen generation MSR plant complete with a cost analysis to ensure profitability. Report was un-published.

Experience:

Period: August 2011 – July 2012 Company: VCore Renewable Energies

Location: Carlsbad, CA

Position: Senior Process Engineer

-Designed and commissioned gas processing equipment for a Landfill-Gas-to-Energy plant.

-Used AutoCAD and Visio to draft P&IDs for the overall plant and plant sub-systems.

-Applied core Chemical Engineering principles to size chemical scrubbers, PSA, TSA, and Sulfur removal vessels.

-Employed thermodynamics and fluid dynamics background to size and specify heat exchangers, coolers, filters, compressors, vessels, pumps, piping, and orifice diameters. -Performed process engineering calculations to determine maximum allowable pressure drop across a section of pipe, heat transfer between media, dwell times for adsorbent, and concentration levels for required reaction completion.

-Drew on experience from previous exposure to the chemical industry to determine proper sensor types, material choices, and filter options.

-Ensured that the plant was built on time and according to plan. -Conducted site surveys to verify build accuracy.

-Drafted reports on plant progress to be delivered to customers.

Period: June 2006 – March 2008, November 2009 – December 2010 Company: Water One

Location: Benicia, CA

Position: Chemist/Water Treatment Engineer

-Used knowledge of Chemistry and the steady-state behavior of tank reactors to determine which chemicals would be appropriate for use in cooling towers.

-Created new blends of corrosion inhibitors, pH stabilizers and biocides to address customer-specific problems.

-Helped maintain safe characteristics of cooling tower water based on the properties of the feed water and the corresponding cooling tower water composition.

-Ensured that the cooling towers achieved adequate heat transfer between the coolant and the evaporating water at the lowest material cost possible for the customer.

-Conducted site surveys to make recommendations on both equipment and chemical usage. This applied to cooling towers, chiller loops, and boilers.

-Built rapport with clients and listened to their concerns about their systems to provide better service and to meet their changing needs.

Period: March 2008 – November 2009 Company: Intelligent Energy, Inc.

Location: Long Beach, CA

Position: Senior Engineer

Responsibilities:

-Created Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and Test Methods documents to be understood and utilized by other engineers.

-Exercised change-control and peer-review with official documents.

-Led a team of engineers and technicians in sub-system testing and validation.

-Ensured testing was completed on schedule and according to plan.

-Integrated efforts from multiple engineering groups to accomplish given tasks.

-Created Gantt charts to direct manpower.

-Operated, fixed and helped build a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) methane steam reformer in combination with PEM fuel cells as the lead Test Engineer.

-Recorded and analyzed data from the CHP system and made modifications to the test plan in order to meet project milestones and deadlines.

Provided engineering expertise in reactor development, construction, maintenance, and operation.

-Engaged in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Risk Assessment (RA) activities to ensure safety.

-Specified valves, instruments, sensors, gauges, pipeline sizes, heat exchangers, and other critical components based on system requirements and core Chemical Engineering principles.

-Worked with high-pressure gases including Methane/Natural Gas, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Argon, Helium, Carbon Monoxide, and Carbon Dioxide. -I also have experience working with LPG, LNG and liquid Nitrogen, and know the safety protocols pertaining to their use.

-Used AutoCAD and FEMlab to design and optimize a MSR/quench reformer. FEMlab was used to optimize the flow and heat transfer characteristics to attain the highest yield possible and AutoCAD was used to ensure the design was physically viable.

-Prepared reports and presentations about test results viewed by both engineers and upper management.

Achievements at Intelligent Energy:

-Helped achieve performance of 99.9999% Hydrogen purity for use in the PEM fuel cell. Ensured PEM fuel cell was able to deliver maximum electrical output.

-Prevented potential damage to CHP system by implementing a fuel supply surge tank of my own design.

-Trained engineers in CHP operation and ensured the Safe System of Work was in practice.

-Developed a new heat exchanger design that would allow for more efficient heat recovery while reducing overall cost.

-Pioneered a fuel-free electric start-up for the reformer to eliminate the need for stored gas.

-Operated and recorded data for the 1000-hours reformer test and created a test results summary that I presented to leadership.

-Engaged in a design analysis review to develop the next-generation integrated reformer, which would be delivered to a customer.

-Contributed to the overall design and packaging of the reformer/ancillaries.
