Career Summary and Goals
My career in healthcare started soon after graduating high school in 1987 as I began working materials management at John Peter Smith Hospital (JPSH) in Fort Worth, Texas. I was picked by the hospital for a scholarship for an associates in respiratory therapy and given a job in the department while attending school. I started cleaning and processing respiratory therapy equipment, doing EKG’s, running the arterial blood gas lab, and doing floor therapy while in school. I graduated and began working in the emergency room, adult ICU’s, pediatric unit, and began to specialize in the neonatal ICU. I participated in surfactant therapy research at this facility. I maintained employment with JPSH for 10 years.
I expanded my career in pediatrics and neonatolgy in 1991-1993 while working at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and was hired as a neonatal ICU specialist. I worked with transplant patients, participated in pediatric research projects, sensormedics high frequency ventilation, and was a member of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) team.
I worked for three local respiratory therapy agencies in the 1993. Respiratory Associates of Texas, Associates of Respiratory in Texas, and TexasHealth Resources. I work as a prn staffing therapist at numerous local hospitals in the Dallas-FortWorth metroplex and some hospitals which included Cooks Children’s Hospital, Harris Methodist Hospital, Transitional Hospital Corporation, Arlington Medical Center, and Baylor Medical Center of Dallas.
I began my career in long term acute care(LTAC) with Transitional Hospital Corporation (later Vencor, and then Kindred) in December of 1993. I have worked at four of the company’s hospital in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Care delivered centered around tracheostomy care, long term ventilator care, and pulmonary rehab. I married a registered nurse and moved west to Albuquerque yet maintained full-time employment with a transfer to Kindred Hospital in Albuquerque which is where I am currently employed. Care involves a Therapist Driven Procotol in which physician’s write RT to evaluate and treat, and therapist performs all required care based on a continuous assestment of patient’s needs. ACLS certification is mandatory as therapist duties include endotracheal intubation, tracheostomy decannulation and re-insertions, ABG’s, EKG’s, pulmonary rehab, ventilator weaning, transtracheal airway ventilation, and occasional arterial line management. I have been a supervisor at Kindred since 2008 and am responsible for a staff of 2-4 therapist, new employee orientation, quality management, and occasional policy development. I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy in December of 2011. My goals are to expand my career into a larger management, education, or sales role. A goal of futhering my education is also a highly likely possiblitity, with a business degree.
