EDWARD G. PARENT
PROFILE
R&D scientist with over 25 years experience in the Medical Device industry. I work in field of biomaterials developing and testing the biocompatibility, safety and efficacy of products. I have developed polymeric drug delivery systems and biomaterials for use in osteoarthritis, soft tissue augmentation, rheumatoid arthritis, ophthalmic as well as products for use in topical skin care. I have experience in bringing products from bench top to large scale production, and have a general knowledge of FDA requirements in the medical device.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
2003 - 2010 Hylamed Inc / LuroMed LLC Tarrytown, NY
Director of Operations / Scientist
Develop new biomaterials based on natural polymers and silicone.
Develop drug delivery products for topical skin care..
Patented polymeric biomaterial for topical skin care and Dermal filler.
Developed process to manufacture 1500kg batches of product in one day, previously 40kg batches in 5 days, making the process practical.
Supervised the production of Biocare product line marketed by Dow Chemical and Hylasome marketed by Lipo Chemical. Responsible for QA, keeping Batch Records, Certificates of Analysis, and authorize batch release.
Set up a new research lab, analytical lab, and a production facility.
Set up system of QC and QA in compliance with FDA Regulations.
2000-2002 GENZYME BIOSURGERY Ridgefield, NJ
Staff Scientist I
Worked in large groups on several projects simultaneously to develop new drug delivery systems, new polymeric based biomaterials, and to develop and scale up new products. Some projects I worked on include:
Drug delivery to the ear for vertigo
Cardiac delivery for atrial fibrillation
Intraarticular delivery for cartilage repair.
Development of coating for a drug eluting stent
Develop and scale up new arthritis device
Targeted drug delivery
Corneal wound healing
Atomic Force Microscopy
Radiation Safety Officer
1983-2000 BIOMATRIX INC Ridgefield, NJ
Scientist
Worked at a start-up company with 9 other people, Biomatrix grew to a company with 500+ employees worth $750M. Worked to develop biomaterials marketed as medical products such as Synvisc, Hylaform, and Hylashield.
Developed and implemented biocompatibility testing procedures for biomaterials
including:
in-vitro compatibility with blood and tissue
Immune response and ELISA development
Degradation and metabolic clearance studies.
Studied hyaluronan in bodily fluids, i.e. the vitreous and synovial fluid
Studied receptor binding, endocytosis, cell adhesion, and proliferation
Purified and characterized enzymes, and proteins
Tissue culture and organ culture.
Write SOP’s, Protocol’s, Reports.
Developed and evaluated a platform of Drug Delivery Systems for a variety of applications including: Antibiotics, Antineoplastics, antisense drugs, Peptides, Growth Factors, Antiangiogenics, small drugs, Interferon, etc by various routes such as:
subcutaneous, intravascular, intraarticular, ophthalmic, topical, implant
