Research Experience
I have spent the last three years investigating a recently discovered defense mechanism present in many prokaryotes that functions to protect the organisms against phages and other genome invaders known as the CRISPR-Cas system. I have identified and characterized a novel endoribonuclease, Cas6, from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus that cleaves long precursor RNAs into short, invader targeting CRISPR RNAs. I designed and optimized assay conditions that allow simultaneous detection of substrate binding and cleavage activity. In addition, I have determined several key catalytic features of the enzyme, including the requirements for substrate recognition as well likely catalytic amino acids. During my graduate career I also played an active role in training and mentoring a number of undergraduates and junior graduate students.

Teaching Experience
Biology 1103L: Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology lab for non-science majors. I designed assignments including quizzes, gave lectures, led class discussions, graded all assignments, and determined final grades.
Biology 1104L: Introduction to Organismal Biology lab for non-science majors. Same responsibilities as above.
