EXPERIENCE: June 2010-present: Biological Science Technician (GS-5)

I work for the National Park Service at Saguaro National Park

(Rincon Mountain District). In summer 2010, I conducted systematic mapping surveys of buffelgrass, participated in the 2010 Saguaro Census, and monitored rock pools (tinajas) for lowland leopard frogs and sediment. I worked with volunteers, school groups, and the general public. Currently, I am working on a remote wildlife camera project, compliance and planning of park projects, and I write reports, resource briefs, and assist with editing documents.

January 2010-May 2010: Graduate Teaching Assistant

I was a T.A. for two lab sections of Introductory Soil Science in the Soil, Water, and Environmental Science Department at the University of Arizona. I prepared and presented lectures, graded assignments, created and proctored exams, and accompanied students on class trips.

August 2009-December 2009: Graduate Teaching Assistant

I was a T.A. for the Sonoran Desert Discovery course in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department at the University of Arizona. I assisted the professor with grading, organization, lectures, coordinating class trips, and other tasks.

January 2008-July 2009: Park Interpreter for Riverside County

I worked at the Louis Robidoux Nature Center again. I held the same position and fulfilled the same work duties and responsibilities (see below).

March 2007-June 2007: Temporary Assignment: Animal Care Technician for Riverside County Department of Animal Services

I cared for dogs, cats, and other animals the Animal Control Officers brought into the animal shelter.

June 2005-March 2007: Park Interpreter for Riverside County

I worked at the Louis Robidoux Nature Center for the Regional Parks and Open-Space District in Riverside, CA. I worked as a wildlife biologist, nature interpreter, and assistant to the park director. I coordinated with park rangers from the campground connected to our center. I cared for the animals in our exhibit area that we used for interpretive programs with the public. I led nature walks, helped coordinate festivals and annual summer camp, and assisted school groups, scouts, and the public in learning about the flora and fauna of the Santa Ana river bottom.

November 2004-April 2005: Centrum Analytical Labs Inorganic Environmental Chemist

I performed analyses on soil, sludge, and water samples using EPA metals digestion methods and wet chemistry techniques. I performed volatile organic chemistry testing, ran a gas spectroscopy mercury machine, analyzed results, prepared formal reports, and participated in lab meetings.

May 2003-December 2003: Arizona Hydrological Society Intern: 2003 Leonard Halpenny Scholarship Award Recipient

I worked for five local hydrological agencies and performed tasks similar to those of an entry-level hydrologist. I worked for Hydro Geo Chem, Errol L. Montgomery and Associates, Tucson Water, Metropolitan Water Company, and the Nature Conservancy.

December 2002-May 2003: Petshotel Kennel Technician

I cared for dogs and cats in a kennel setting. I provided food and water, cleaned kennels, exercised the animals, and supervised in the playroom.

September 2002-November 2002: Animal Caretaker for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

I cared for a variety of desert animals used by docents for interpretive public demonstrations. I worked with raptors, reptiles, small mammals, arachnids, and arthropods.

January 2001-August 2002: Conservation Biology Intern for the Tucson Audubon Society

I completed two summers of fieldwork for a project I designed and developed with a mentor from Audubon, and various professors from the University of Arizona. I conducted a nest box experiment, nest searches, and line transect songbird surveys along a portion of the Santa Cruz River in Marana, Arizona. I compiled my results into a scientific paper and presented my findings at two undergraduate symposiums.

I also worked at the Audubon Mason Nature Center. I led school children on tours of the center, and worked with Boy and Girl Scouts, adults, and senior citizens on various projects. I dedicated some research time to point count bird surveys and road kill surveys at the center.

January 2000-December 2000: Lab Technician for Arizona Research Labs

I worked in a Drosophila (fruitfly) research laboratory. I prepared culture medium, cultured flies, and performed experiments under the supervision of graduate students and research scientists. I attended and participated in lab meetings.

June 1999-January 2000: Clerical Worker

I worked in the main office of the School of Natural Resources at the University of Arizona. I assisted with filing, correspondence, typing, data entry, and general upkeep of the office. I also interacted with faculty and staff in the department.
