Christian Medical College was founded by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder in 1895. It is one of the standardized

hospital in Asia. It is a private university teaching hospital (Medicine, Nursing and Allied Medicine).

Extensions of the Hospital include the Eye Hospital, Ida Scudder ward, two rural hospitals-CHAD &

RUHSA facilitating changes in the lives of rural people.

The College of Nursing is an Integral part of CMC. It has been recognized in 2000 by Government of

India as an “Institute of Excellence in India”. In 2001 the National Assessment and Accreditation

Council (NAAC) an autonomous institution of the university grants commission awarded a “Five Star”

Rating to our institution.

In 2002 the institution was awarded “ H.I. H-ONE FOR SUPER SPECIALITY TEACHING HOSPITAL,

rating by ICRA (Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency). In 2003, the College of Nursing was

turned as “WHO COLLABORATING CENTER FOR NURSING AND MIDWIFERY DEVELOPMENT”.

The College has become Member of the “Global Network” for WHO Collaborating Centers. It is also

certified as the Study Center for National PhD Consortium by Indian Nursing Council. Our institution is

also known for the outstanding and multidisciplinary departments and Excellency in clinical work. CMCH

has a bed rate of 2234 and average inpatient strength of 2000 and an average outpatient of 4000 are

treated everyday with 65 wards, 33 clinics and 110 departments.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Nurses prayer and taking over report from previous duty staff

• Keeping the necessary equipments and drapes for the surgery

• Receiving the correct patient by checking the patient personal profile with surgery list and patient

case sheet

• Giving psychological and spiritual support to patients, after assessing their needs.

• Drug calculations, preparation and administration of pre-medication (oral, parentral).

• Monitoring vital signs and rendering direct patient care.

• Assisting for procedures like central venous and arterial line insertion (internal jugular, sub-

clavian, femoral, brachial), venesection, thoracentesis, paracentesis, blood transfusion, lumbar

puncture.

• Starting intra venous lines for fluid correction.

• To draw blood samples for electrolytes, hb, cardiac enzymes, platelets and rapid bbvs in case of

trauma and emergency cases.

• Inserting ng tube and assisting in endo-tracheal intubation

• Urinary catheterization and catheter care, on table prior to abdominal and time consuming

surgeries.

• Checking the vacuum (suction) and medical gases supply tubings prior to surgery.

• Keeping the sterile table draped with sterile sheets and arranging the adequate instruments and

equipments for particular surgery adhering to sterile techniques.

• Maintenance of sterile and aesthetic environment.

• Positioning the patient on table depending on surgery with position devices.

• Assisting effectively as anticipatory and skilled scrub-nurse in the surgical field.

• As floor nurse connecting the suction, cautery and monitors and additional sterile supplys

• Compilation of surgery details in records and maintaining sponge and gauze counts in account

note books.

• Surgical dressing, once after the surgery, i.e., skin closure.

• Resuscitating during cardiac and respiratory arrest with other health team members.

• Immediate post operative monitoring until extubation and reversal from anaesthesia till proceeded

to recovery room.

• Meet the therapeutic, hygienic, comfort and safety needs of the patient.

• After surgery washing, packing and forwarding instruments for autoclave.

• Taking precautions in organizing and carrying out “Bio-hazard” cases, their disinfections and

waste disposal.

• Application of pop cast and splints.

• Maintenance of instruments and implant supplies.

• Clinical presentations on surgical topics at in-service programs.

• Taking general and specific inventory.

• Organized working with other health team members.
