I have been awarded a departmental fellowship that pays my tuition and a small living stipend in exchange for

approximately 20 hours a week of work. My duties involve proctoring tests, conducting administrative business for

the department and facilitating new student arrivals.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT II Transfer, Re-entry and Student Parent Services

University of California; Berkeley, CA; 8/08 – 7/09

I worked with several groups of underrepresented students at UC Berkeley including student parents, student veterans

and re-entry students (students who are 25 years or older and returning to school after a prolonged absence.) My

duties included conducting a 12-student, 1-credit seminar to discuss and address unique issues that arise from these

various situations.

LINGUIST / TRANSLATOR 1st Radio Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA

Sergeant USMC; 2002-2007 (Honorable Discharge)

Duties as a linguist included audio and document translation, operation and troubleshooting of very sophisticated

equipment as well as real-time interpretation of Persian-Farsi and Persian-Dari. I attained extremely high levels of

proficiency in both Persian-Farsi and Persian-Dari. In addition, I was able to teach myself passable Arabic with no

official training and I operated occasionally within that language as well.

Duties as a Sergeant included tactical and administrative guidance over a small group of linguists (approximately 14)

that operated twenty-four hours a day. Additional duties included the collection, organization and analysis of large

amounts of raw data received from multiple sources in order to form a coherent narrative of ongoing events in

potential combat situations. As a Sergeant, it my job was to supervise this process and communicate our findings

upwards in the chain of command.

Volunteer Experience

COMPUTER SKILLS INSTRUCTOR Migrant Worker Task Force

08/2011 – present

I currently teach a weekly computer class for the Beirut-based nonprofit, Migrant Worker Task Force. The program

seeks to educate migrant workers in Lebanon in English and practical skills such as computer usage.

VOLUNTEER ESL INSTRUCTOR American University of Beirut

09/2010 – 05/2011

I participated in a program that offered AUB’s physical plant staff free ESL courses taught by native-level English

speaking students. Since resources are extremely limited, and high quality textbooks are beyond the budget of the

program, my responsibilities included day-to-day curriculum development based around the students’ goal to pass the

Elementary English Test (EET) by the end of the academic year. Classes ranged from eight to fifteen students and

were held three hours per week.

WRITING COACH Writer Coach Connection

09/2009 – 05/2010

I participated in a program called, “Writer Coach Connection.” This program had several partnerships with at-risk

schools in Oakland, CA in which writing coaches would attend high school English classes once a week and meet

one-on-one with students to revise and structure their assignments. The teachers, who were assigned upwards of thirty

students per period, did not have the time to dedicate to one-on-one mentoring and the program addresses this need

effectively. As a volunteer, I attended a multi-week training program and followed the same sophomore-level high

school class through the 2009-2010 academic year.

I conducted both written and verbal constituent correspondence, assisted with scheduling and provided written

analysis of higher education and veterans’ affairs bills and liaised with statewide veteran and student service
