Professional Work Experience

Alpha Natural Resources, (ANR), Bristol, Tennessee 1987 2012

Alpha Natural Resources: the United States’ second largest mining company. For the past twenty five years, I worked in various positions for either ANR or companies which were merged to form Alpha Natural Resources.

Position: Regional Sourcing Manager of Purchasing 2005 2012

Managed regional and corporate purchasing strategies in support of operations along with management of sub-contractor contracts and insurance requirements.

Accomplishments:

Developed newly formed department utilizing electronic purchasing software and purchasing credit cards, creating a 98% corporate efficiency rating. Consolidated various product acquisitions enabling cost reductions. Negotiated long term contracts controlling cost fluctuations.

Position: Director of Risk Management 1999 2005

Responsible for the identification and mitigation of insurance risk for a newly formed company. This included the initial three major acquisitions during the formation of ANR and covering the complete risk identification, transfer, and management of claims.

Accomplishments:

Initiated the process of developing a corporate risk strategy through identifying risk and centralizing the procurement of insurance coverage, which reduced the cost to the company.

Position: Group Controller/Officer Positions 1987 1999

Performed controller duties for a group of nine companies consisting of coal, trucking, and trading companies. Responsible for Finance, Accounting, Management Information Systems, Personnel, Purchasing and Inventory Control Departments.

Accomplishments:

Consolidated controller positions by centralizing accounting duties; decreased overall company costs; increased timely financial reporting.

Developed strong communication with operating management, which lead to better financial forecasting and fiscal control.

Designed, developed and implemented reporting system for consolidation of companies. Selected accounting software and network connectivity, which resulted in improved information integrity and established policies and procedures that improved internal controls.
