Teaching
As Adjunct Professor and Full Time Professor of American and Texas Government, Houston Community College, Katy Branch, Spring Branch and Central Campuses, Katy, Texas, teach two semester class on American Government and Texas Government.
Legal
As a solo practitioner, perform legal work in areas of estate planning, including estate planning for unmarried couples and gay and lesbian clients; pet trusts; probate; elder law; Veterans’ benefits; Social Security disability law; and employee benefits law. As an attorney at Coats and Todd, P.C., wrote Appeals Council briefs in Social Security disability cases, drafted hearing memos, represented Social Security disability claimants at administrative hearings across the state of Texas, and conducted 20 hearings per month. As a trial attorney at Mullin, Hoard and Brown, L.L.P., litigated cases in areas of business law, contract law, employee benefits law, and insurance law. Also, performed legal work in areas of health care law, corporate and partnership law, estate planning, probate law, and elder law. Resigned to provide full-time care for my mother who had Alzheimer’s Disease.
Organization, Administration, and Public Speaking
As Manager of Community Health Services, coordinated programs and supervised staff of 66 which included services such as Health Education and Nutrition, Geriatric Nursing, Adult Nursing, Homeless Health Care, AIDS Prevention, Physical Therapy, Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, and Adolescent Drug Abuse Program. Responsibilities included budget preparation and monitoring (budget $5.2 million); negotiation, preparation, monitoring, and administration of contracts; development of briefing information for City Council, department heads, and City Manager; program planning; management analysis; grant writing, program evaluation and quality assurance; and staffing of City Commissions or Committees.
Achievements included the following: writing of a grant for federal funds which resulted in receiving an award of $877,000 over a two year period to expand the Homeless Health Care Program; receipt of a National Certificate of Merit from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the “strong leadership, vision, and public-private partnership” and innovative and exemplary use of funding for the Homeless Health Care program; reorganization of Adolescent Drug Abuse Program which increased outreach and increased the numbers of minority adolescents served; receipt of 1988 “Innovativeness in Programming” award from The National League of Cities for the comprehensive Adolescent Drug Abuse Program; restructuring of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program which increased prevention efforts to male adolescents, the 12 to 15-year-old age group, and Hispanic adolescents; and receipt of grant for $750,000 for the treatment component of the Adolescent Drug Abuse Program.
As Manager of Health Education and Nutrition Services, supervised staff of 11. Supervision included providing technical assistance and consultation to education staff as well as direct supervision and evaluation of personnel. Wrote curriculum and taught classes in stress management, childbirth, diabetes, educational techniques, group dynamics skills, and communication skills.
