1. General Research

* Regression, response surface method, multi-objective optimization for structural and mechanical design

* Used PROE, SOLIDWORKS and AUTOCAD for general CAD modeling; developed prototypes for dynamics of machinery and machine design; conducted motion simulation of linkages and gear trains in research

* Used CMM (coordinate measuring machine) for reverse engineering and rapid-prototype machine for model prototypes, vibration test and material test machines

* Used ABAQUS and ANSYS for mechanics, machine design and vibration; research in dynamic gear train simulation and performance analysis

2. Mechanism

* Worked with others on linkage, cam and gear synthesis: planar/spatial mechanism workspace study, dynamic analysis, synthesis methodology, spur/bevel gearing, harmonic gearing.

* Developed a fully functional C++ program with user-friendly GUI (using “WXWINDOWS”) that synthesize four-bar linkages and coupler curves with OpenGL visualization

* Specially synthesized and analyzed a “Dynamic Compactor” for soil densification using a sixbar linkage to transmit motion and balance the moment of the crane; used FEM to analyze the base structure.

3. Dissertation Oriented Research Gearing

* Independently proposed and established the first freeform gear (including planar, spherical and spatial gears) modeling and design methodology, which integrates gearing, geometric modeling and CAE/FEA, that empowers designers seeking optimal design for performance enhancement (contact stress, sliding, transmission error, etc.)

* Co-authored research proposal “Goali: Manifold Conjugation Modeling, Synthesis, and Optimization” submitted to the National Science Foundation

* Conducted years of analysis and experiments of the proposed methods

* Designed a gear train containing planetary gears and bevel gears according to standards; kinematic design, load analysis and manufacturing

* Developed a fully functional C++ program to implement algorithms and numerical evaluation: user friendly GUI (graphic user interface), gear modeling, gear CAD generation, visualization, mesh generation, CAE/FEA, and optimization.

* Another gear optimization software was developed in windows with GUI (MFC) and CAD modeling and generation
