Franklin County Public Defender, Columbus, OH 2000-Present

Trial Staff Attorney (2004-Present). Represent indigent clients charged with misdemeanor offenses. Negotiate settlements with the prosecutor, the client and the judge. File briefs on behalf of the client – motions to dismiss, motions to compel evidence, and motions to suppress. Represent individuals charged with felonies at their initial appearance. Research complex legal issues. Work closely with investigators to determine evidence.

• Carry a caseload of up to 200 clients at a time.

• Assist other attorneys during their absence thereby counseling thousands of clients on legal options, evidence findings, and the legal ramifications of convictions.

Franklin County Public Defender, Juvenile Division, Legal Intern (2002-2003) Assisted attorneys in preparation of criminal and civil cases by filing discovery requests, writing various motions and setting court dates. Researched and prepared cases involving abused, neglected and dependent children.

Assisted attorneys in arraignment court by conducting client interviews. Supported 30 attorneys on discovery requests. Made appropriate contacts in order to have warrants set aside and new court dates set.

Unpaid Public Relations Internships.

West Virginia University Center for Black Culture and Research: Created and produced alumni newsletter for Parents’ Weekend event. Worked with Bill Cosby’s publicist to ensure logistical requirements were met for his Sunday night appearance.

West Virginia University Center for Women’s Studies: Utilized PageMaker to revamp website. Designed and built database, via Excel Spreadsheet, identifying all colleges/universities that had a Women’s Studies class. Built press kits for Mary Francis Berry, a visiting speaker and Civil Rights Chairperson from the U.S. government.

Monongalia Area Humane Society: Authored weekly press releases for Adopt-A-Pet.
