L. Douglas Sargent, Jr.
Objective To work for a company where I can obtain business and personal growth, and in turn create new business and repeat customer business, using customer satisfaction as the basis drive for new and continued growth, while working within the company’s forecast for future growth.
Summary
Experience Thank you for reviewing my resume. As you will be able to see I have a very extensively deep and vast construction background in multiple disciplines. These were developed over the last 32 years while holding various positions in my tenure, Business Owner, Director of Construction, Sr. Project Manager, Sr. Estimator, Sr. Contract Administrator to mention a few, having hands on experience in many of the primary construction trades I am able to communicate very effectively with each and every vendor.
If I listed every project I had ever been involved with my resume would be many more pages longer than what it is now, and that is just not feasible, it would take entirely too much time to read and digest. With that stated, I have listed what I feel to be the key projects where I was in a lead position of management.
Every project was from conception to completion, not as a single task, but as multiple tasks where every part required I was deeply and intimately involved with.
Working with DOD, DOE, State, Local Governments, Private and Public sectors it has given me a broad scope of experience, one primary quality that I have obtained among many, is my attention to detail and understanding the paperwork, reporting and especially accountability for the customers satisfaction, on time delivery, under budget and an ability to deliver a twelve to twenty percent net profit at the end of the project.
I have done every project the same way, understanding each task, understanding each vendor, understanding the budget and realizing that the success of the project is dependent upon me doing my job well up front.
With all the education, continuing education and many seminars I have obtained, there was none of them that gave me the real life hands on experience that a former small business owner that I was taught me. Securing projects and keeping projects in the pipeline, meeting payrolls and all the tax liabilities, workers compensation, insurances, bonding along with the day to day overhead expenses, it has given me a greater insight to what my future employer is dealing with and making me a greater asset to their company to ensure that they are a success, that sense of urgency that is imbedded deep within me cannot be substituted in any way.
The contacts that I have within the DOD, DOE, Public and Private sector also gives me an advantage in working toward a goal of success for my future employer as well.
While reading my resume, please understand that there is much more than just black and white words, the depth of my background and knowledge that I have maintained is second to none, likewise, the drive to succeed will make me an outstanding choice for your company.

Accomplishments
• In all bidding processes, I was usually the only bidder that took in 10+ value engineering benefits while other bidders usually had 3 or 4 with private clients.
• Knowing that our industry is ever changing; I have always tried to maintain my education by reading everything I can get my hands on. Both for professional and personal growth.
• Have bided work in the following states, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and Pennsylvania.
• Having experience in various locations, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and Pennsylvania, I have accumulated a large list of quality prime subcontractors as well as sub-prime contractors including many material supplier contacts.
• Upon making the contacts I was able to approve and disapprove those vendors that I wanted to do business with, by evaluating their competence through conversations and identification of licensees, insurances, crew size, billing services, ability to perform according to draw schedules and technical competence.
• I have developed an eye for detail; I can tell when something is just 1/8 inch out of level or plumb. I have been told that I was “the pickiest construction manager that they had ever met”, especially when it comes to safety and cleanliness my opinion is if it is not good enough for me personally how can I expect someone else to accept it?
• I authored 2 complete construction manuals from building layout through the walk-through/punch-list, including many monitoring forms and documents. I have also authored several different software programs for estimating, sales staff and customer presentations.
• I have an ability to be able to disagree without being disagreeable. If two intelligent human beings can discuss the core issues then somewhere there is an answer that will benefit everyone involved. I have a deep core belief of hard work, integrity, communication, passion for customer satisfaction including my industry, especially for my team and employer; all radiate professionalism.
Benefits
• My experiences have allowed me to be in the position to bring to my future employer 30 solid years of experience in all facets of construction. I have had many golden opportunities to learn from great teachers and knowledgeable cohorts who have unselfishly gave of themselves for the benefit of passing the trade onto me. Having been in a place of responsibility of providing work for those I have had contact with and their families over my 16 years of owning my own business gave me great satisfaction of knowing I contributed to them and their family’s successes. I hope that this experience is something that I can continue on doing.
• I have also been able to learn lessons that cannot be taught in the classrooms by being self-employed for 16 years, such as cash flow for business, researching and securing work, finding various trades when going into a new area, getting involved in community activities and most of all knowing at the end of the day I made a difference in the world around me, I never want the accolade, but would rather my team around me get the credit.
• Having performed first hand most of the tasks that are required on any construction site I am able to discuss with great intelligence, with anyone the way that I want it completed as well as what is acceptable and what is not. If during the construction process and something is discovered that is not correct, I am able to get the work re-done by the original vendor without any additional costs to the budget.
• I am a multi-tasker at heart; I can handle many activities at one time without losing focus on any of them. I enjoy working with my cohorts and we learn from each other and together. I enjoy being busy and thinking and planning ahead. My mentor taught me the value of the 7 P’s Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pitifully Poor Performance!
• My purchasing and document experience goes hand in hand with the supervision of trades, one without the other causes problems from the start to the completion. This is why it is so important to me that my team around me including the support staff is committed to excellence. Failure is not an option with me, and that begins with me. I have a very high standard for myself to help my team succeed. Success breeds more success as well as future work for the team that I am a part of.
