Michigan Waste Energy, Detroit, MI 1994 - 2012

Electrical and Instrumentation Superintendent - The facility processes up to 20 thousand tons a week of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), producing up to 550,000 pounds per hour (PPH) steam and 70 megawatts of electricity using a GE turbine Generator for the plant and the City of Detroit which includes the following duties:

• Managed seven Electrical and Instrumentation Technicians maintaining operation of the seven day a week/365 day a year facility.

• Maintained and serviced three process lines consisting of 40 motors per line with PLC5 controls with Labview HMI interface.

• Engineered and installed four 200 HP ABB VFD drives for cooling tower fans improving performance of generator output.

• Maintained fire system controls for the very large waste process and power block buildings

• Saved over $10,000 per year and increased reliability and reduced maintenance by engineering and installing a waste water pump for lime slurry.

• Increased safety and saved $14,000 by implementing new zero speed switches for conveyors.

• Increased feed to boilers 25% and maintained boiler load efficiency by engineering and installing a new VFD conveyor system.

• Increased safety and saved tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance and materials by engineering and installing VFD and local low voltage controls on 30 sifting screw motors.

• Improved reliability of six 200 HP atomizing scrubber spray machines by engineering and installing local remote temperature alarm and trip indicators.

• Saved many thousands of dollars per year by engineering clinker switches to prevent plugs at discharge of the submerge scraper conveyors.

• Improved operation of the boilers by engineering and installing new VFD drives to regulate the speed and efficiency of the boiler grates. Also programmed the VFD to trip on hi torque preventing grate damage that would result in long down time on the boiler.

• Engineered and installed IR temperature probes that increased safety and decreased cost during replacement of four 30 foot thermo welds in each of three boilers at a cost of $75,000 per year. The IR temperature probes had a one time cost of $39,000 for all three boilers.

• Saved $4k a year in lamp and ballast replacement by engineering and installing new 120 watt LED light fixtures at each picking station in the Process Facility.

• Saved $50k a year by engineering and installing vibrators for submerged scraper conveyors to conserve moisture content of ash being hauled to hazardous landfill.
