NORTHWESTERN LAKE FOREST HOSPITAL, Lake Forest, Illinois 1989 - 2011
A community-based, 205 bed hospital that is part of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, one of the nation’s premiere academic medical centers. Lead the full-service Human Resources functions across the organization:
Director of Human Resources (2001- 2011) - Responsibilities included oversight and management of staff providing services in the following areas: recruitment and hiring; employee relations and support of department managers on employee satisfaction and retention issues; staff and management compensation/incentive programs; employee benefits; employee health and wellness initiatives; employment law and regulation support and guidance; orientation and training; staff and management development; competency development and management; organizational development; HR technology selection and management; payroll; unemployment claims management; Workers’ Compensation program management.
– Department staff consists of 11 direct reports (10.75 FTEs): 1 Compensation/HRIS Manager; 2 HR Generalists; 1 Healthcare Recruiter; 1 HRIS/Compensation Analyst; 1 Senior Benefits Administrator; 1 Benefits Coordinator; 1HR Recruiter Assistant; and 3 HR Assistants (part-time)
– Managed annual $1.5 million HR Operations & $17 million Employee Benefits budgets. Operations maintained consistently at or below annual budget. Employee Benefits managed to within 1% of budget due to escalating costs of health insurance.
– Oversight responsibility for self-funded PPO employee health and dental plans through third-party administrator; self-funded short-term disability plan; fully insured long-term disability plan; employer-contribution 403B plan, providing employees choice between 2 vendors; defined-benefit employee pension plan.
– Facilitation of change and transition management for business process redesigns and new business acquisition initiatives. Designed and delivered management education for department-based staff transition management.
– Facilitation of process improvement teams on an organizational and departmental level.
– Provided consultative services to management staff on analyzing effectiveness of current operational structures and staffing, including competency-based performance management systems; based on client goals, recommended and facilitated changes necessary to achieve desired performance.

– Managed recruitment and retention initiatives resulting in significant decrease in turnover (23% in 2000 to 12% in 2008; currently at 4% in 2009) and vacancy rates of 2% to 3% in key healthcare professional positions.
– Developed Tuition Forgiveness program resulting in successful recruitment of nurses and other difficult to recruit health care professionals at less cost to organization than previous advertising expenditures.
– Partnered with Nursing Leadership to bring an on-site tuition-assisted BSN completion and MSN program for current nursing staff (through Purdue University).
– Implemented and lead a multidisciplinary Staffing Effectiveness Committee that provides oversight and guidance to organization in maintaining continuous compliance with JCAHO HR Standard. No improvement recommendations for Staffing Effectiveness or Staff Competency cited by JCAHO during recent survey.
– Initiated HR Dashboard to provide vital HR metrics to organizational management for improved decision-making and operational outcomes.
Organizational Development Consultant (1994-2001) - Provided performance consulting services to department managers across the organization. Performed assessments to determine desired vs. actual performance; in collaboration with client developed and facilitated implementation of plan for improvement; and provided tools for follow-up measurement of plan success.
