As a Systems Engineer and representative of the US Navy on the Zumwalt Destroyer program, I was assigned to work at a development site in St. Petersburg, FL while working remotely with other sites around the country. My role in this position was to assist the developers in various tasks while ensuring that the customer’s requirements were being met. As a part of the Navy’s technical team of engineers, my duties during the following phases are described below:

Requirements Development Phase:

• Iterative development of a software vision document which defines, at a high level, the customer’s system requirements.

• Developed requirement artifacts using UML on a Rational Rose platform (use case diagrams, activity diagrams, sequence diagrams, etc.).

• Developed Element, Component, and SCI level requirements using the DOORs database platform.

Preliminary Design Phase:

• Used UML to create preliminary design documents that define the internal architecture and interfaces used by the individual SCIs.

• Developed preliminary element, component, and SCI level test documents using the DOORs database platform.

• Participated in the design discussions and final review of architecture design documents for the SCIs and component.

Detailed Design Phase:

• Development of final SCI design documents which define the implementation details needed to begin software coding.

• Further development of Test Cases using the DOORs database platform.

Code & Unit Test Phase:

• Development of code using C++ on a unix platform.

• Development of Unit Test Plans to test the software code units.

Software Integration and Test:

• Final development and refinement of verification documents.

• Verification of requirements during formal testing events.

Out of phase work and phase completion work:

• End to End Reviews: Analysis of large scale functionality changes. Worked with engineers from other areas of the system to verify that all requirements were met and interfaces were properly designed.

• Phase Completion Reviews & Milestone Reviews: Worked with team management to present the teams analysis and concerns to Tier 1 management.

• Software Trouble Report Analysis and Updates: Used simulated testing environments to recreate issues and then developed a corrective package to present to the change control board for approval. Corrections included code changes, supporting document changes (if needed), interface updates (if needed), and regression test plans.
