Free-Lance Furniture Designer and The ReStore

July 2005-November 2006

The most notable design work I did was for Mandarin-Pacific Designs in Guangzhou, China. I stayed in China for six weeks to design and develop furniture for domestic Chinese consumption and international sales.

During this period I was also able to work with the good people at The ReStore in Seattle. The ReStore salvages good condition construction materials for reuse and educates the community in environmental responsibility.

As studio manager I was responsible for design, production, facilities improvement, employee oversight and training.

Skills

Product Design

I love the design process from the very first idea, through research and development to prototyping and production. I really enjoy working with the team of clients, designers, engineers and producers to make the design the best it can be. I am hands-on and love being in the shop.

Responsible Design

I believe that good design is responsible design. A pleasant form or clever idea is not enough; social, health and environmental concerns are inseparable from the design process. My favorite reading on the subject is Cradle to Cradle by McDonough and Braungart.

Design Presentation and Client Care

During my work as an interior designer I gained experience presenting, explaining design and helping clients with any concerns they may have.

Materials

I have gained experience with a range of materials and finishes including wood, metal, plastics, stone, bamboo, fabric, fiberglass, laminates, glass, paint, powder coating and lacquer.

Computer Skills

I have five years of experience with Auto CAD and a working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Excel and all other basic programs. I am eager to learn new programs and am willing to put in all the effort it takes to master them.

Illustration and Rendering

I love to draw and make things come alive on a page. I have studied drawing and commercial product rendering at college. In my work as an interior designer I often made detailed sketches for clients.

Craft and Production

I have experience in woodworking, metal working, plastics and finishes. I have worked in factories and small wood shops. I firmly understand that design doesn’t end in the studio, it continues though-out the whole production process and through the life of the product.

Experiences

ICFF Contemporary Furniture Fair

I helped to design, build and run the student booth in college.

Asia

I have really enjoyed living and working in Asia. My time there has given me insight to the cultures and the people.

While in China I trained Chinese designers in western design methods, worked with the factories to produce our designs and participated in the Guangzhou Design Week exhibition, the first of its kind in mainland China.

Working in Japan has given me experience in a Japanese corporation and communicating with the people here. Also living there has allowed me to see the latest designs and trends.
