EXPERIENCE
Metabolix, Inc., (Mirel Bioplastics) Cambridge, MA 2006-present
Senior Scientist & Film Product Technology Manager
• Developed commercially-viable PHA formulations (including blends & multi-layer constructions) for blown and cast film applications. Pioneered effort to develop and commercialize the first ever PHA blown film product.
• Demonstrated the effectiveness of PHB copolymer films for agricultural mulch applications, including several field trials. Developed a soil biodegradation test protocol to expedite product development for mulch films.
• Discovered (& patented) and developed a broad platform of blends of biodegradable polymers including commercialization of two such blends.
• Led a cross-functional team to accelerate commercialization of the PHA film products. Worked extensively with business development group to develop applications and commercial sale for PHB copolymer film products. Established close working and collaborative relationships with several film convertors and brand owners.
• Characterized melt rheological attributes of PHB copolymers, including test development & melt-fracture elimination. Developed screw design and extrusion guidelines for PHB copolymers. Successfully scaled the reactive extrusion process for long-chain branched copolymers.
• Established and nurtured extensive relationships with various Universities and some business partners to expedite the commercialization of PHB copolymers.
• Characterized microstructure evolution during the room-temperature storage of PHB copolymers that led to some revolutionary protocols to minimize and reverse the “aging-embrittlement” process. Led the implementation of above protocol at several commercial accounts.
• Successfully synthesized functional PHB copolymers using reactive extrusion.
• Initiated and led the development of the extrusion blow-molding and extrusion paper-coating platform.
Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, Bartlesville, OK 1997-2006
Group Leader & Senior Scientist, Polymer Processing & Solid-State Characterization Research
• Led the development of LLDPE and HMW-HDPE resins for blown and cast film applications.
• Investigated orientation & morphological features in various PE blown films. Discovered new morphological insights on blown film tear, tensile, moisture barrier, optical and impact performance.
• Discovered new insights relating molecular architecture and flow-induced crystallization.
• Key player in the development of HDPE resins for pipe (PE100) applications. Identified key polymer compositional attributes that resulted in two “composition of matter” patents.
• Developed new insights relating molecular architecture and pipe microstructure to the ductile and brittle failure of HDPE pipes in creep rupture testing and rapid crack propagation failure under impact loading.
• Developed many small-scale tests to estimate the design stress and lifetime of HDPE pipes intended for pressure applications. These tests shortened the testing timescales by more than 18 months.
• Investigated extrusion characteristics of PE and related them to melt rheology and solids conveying dynamics.
• Investigated the physical aging characteristics of semi-crystalline PPS and discovered new insights relating the semi-crystalline morphology to aging kinetics.
• Also worked with ionomers, ethylene-norbornene copolymers and EVOH copolymers and PE organoclay nano-composite films.
