PERSONAL STATEMENT

As a postgraduate with MSc. in Biotechnology from the University of Leeds, I am now looking to enter the commercial side of the field, which interests me and would help me build a strong platform for future, helping me reach my aim of management at top level.

Knowledge/Skills Gained:

I gained a lot of experience reading the latest research publications, and learnt how to write articles. Practical applications of the latest tools in the field of bioscience were another great asset that I gained from it. Many of the theoretical subjects that I had learnt during my under-graduate studies became clearer with their applications and gave a confidence boost for the future. The biggest gain of all was learning the business side of the project, which would enable me to think on both the sides of the coin – research as well as management

WORK/INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Mar-Aug 2010 University of Leeds Dept. of Physics and Astronomy/MNP

- Incorporation of bacterial protein FimD in to planar lipid bilayer membrane, mimicking the bacterial outer membrane

Skills Used

- Worked on cutting edge technological instruments like QCM-D, SPR, AFM, and ATR-FTIR

- Designed Gantt chart for the project while gaining knowledge on the commercial side of the project

Mar-June 2009 Alembic Limited Microbial Process Development Lab

- Performed tests to increase the production of Penicillin-G, further used for the production of 6-APA (Amino Penicillinic Acid) and developed new production media for the shake flask culture method

- The production plant successfully implemented a series of changes including a reduction in autoclave time and less usage of spore suspension after our experiments proved it could be profitable for the company

Skills Used

- Developing new cultures with Plackett Burman Method and using shake flask culture method to test the growth with further tests using HPLC

- Planning on experiments with the manager on reducing the use of materials and maximizing the profits

- Successfully evaluated the efficacy of nano-silver colloidal solution for the treatment of bacteria in one of the largest Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) in India

- Sub-cloned a protein from pGEMT-E to pVitroII-DHFR, further transforming into competent cells and checking for the expression of the protein

Skills Used

- PCR, Nanodrop, transformation techniques, use of various restriction enzymes and digests, ligation techniqiues, and SDS-PAGE Electrophoresis

- Worked as a field insurance sales agent with ICICI Prudential Life Insurance (part time)

- Cold calling, communicating people about various policies that company offered, building contacts and reaching targets before the set time
