RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Biomass Steam Gasification (Doctoral Thesis) University of Minnesota March 2011 --- present

Created kinetic models involving reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics with MatLab.

Developed CFD models for gasification process with ANSYS.

Investigated the effect of different models on overall power plant performance using ASPEN PLUS.

Designed experimental apparatus for steam gasification including gas measurement and cleanup system.

Combined Heat and Power (Independent Project for Xcel Energy Inc.) August 2008 --- March 2011

Established models for biomass fired CHP plant with Aspen Plus which includes heat exchangers, cooling, heating, gas turbines, pumps, vessels, and so on.

Optimized system performance which increased the system thermal efficiency by 3%.

Sized and selected equipments for use in estimating capital and operational costs.

Multi-phase Fluidization (Master Thesis) Tsinghua University, China August 2006 --- July 2008

Designed experimental setup, investigated multi-phase fluidization of coarse cohesive particles, found the general rules of agglomeration process, and provided solutions to prevent agglomeration.

Created and validated CFD models for fluidization process using FLUENT.

Performed extensive analysis, and finally found a method which realized early agglomeration detection.

CFD Simulation of Cyclones (Bachelor Thesis) Tsinghua University, China January 2006 --- July 2006

Developed CFD models for particle removal process in cyclones using FLUENT and AutoCAD.

Evaluated different operation parameters and cyclone structure on particle removal efficiency of cyclones.

PROJECTS (selected)

Created CFD models for scrubbing tower with Fluent and AutoCAD, research project, 2006

Conducted HVAC system design in Dunham Associates Inc., HVAC design course, 2010

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficiency in CFD modeling with commercial software Fluent/ANSYS, or programming with MatLab

Other software: AutoCAD, C, Visual Basic, Fortran, MS office, Trace, Aspen Plus

LEADERSHIP SKILLS (selected)

Mentored two undergraduate students towards research, Tshinghua University, 2007

Chief organizer of Cultural Festival of Dept of Thermal Engineering, and in 2005 negotiated the largest amount of sponsorship in the history of that festival, Harbin Institute of Technology, 2002-2005
