Highly organized life scientist passionate about writing looking to apply analytical research and
interpersonal skills to opportunities in the medical communications industry.
Education
PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology, University of Edinburgh, UK, 2006-2009.
MSc in Life Sciences, University of Edinburgh, UK, 2005-2006.
BSc in Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh, UK, 2001-2005.
Experience and Achievements
Postdoctoral Scholar, University of South Florida, February 2012 – present.
o Performed extensive literature searches to develop and write a self-directed research proposal focusing
on the molecular links between insulin resistance and vascular disease in endothelial cells.
o Extensively edited a manuscript produced by a previous member of the lab for submission to
Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) journal for publication.
Postdoctoral Associate, Yale University, February 2010 – February 2012.
o Synthesized and wrote a manuscript describing the role of a novel endothelial peptide/receptor
pathway aimed at discovering potential new treatment targets for heart disease, in preparation for
publication.
o Co-authored a manuscript describing the regulation of endothelial cell physiology by micro RNAs,
which revealed a novel and relevant mechanism in the pathology of pulmonary hypertension in
humans, currently under revision for publication in Nature Medicine.
o Applied critical thinking and research expertise to develop and write two grant proposals for
American Heart Association-funded fellowships centered on identifying new target pathways for the
treatment of heart disease
o Presented work defining a new pathway by which the lipid-lowering drugs statins exert protective
cardiovascular benefits at the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology Meeting 2011.
o Awarded a pilot grant to enable a collaborative project with the Yale small molecule discovery
center in order to screen for potential activators/inhibitors of our target receptor described above.
o Mentored students in basic laboratory techniques.
PhD Student Researcher, University of Edinburgh, 2006 – 2009.
o Awarded a Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD scholarship, a prestigious UK fellowship, to study the roles of
steroid hormone regulation in atherosclerosis with the overall aim of investigating why heart disease
is accelerated in patients with mineralocorticoid excess.
o Published two peer-reviewed papers involving quantitative analysis of complex data, literature
research, and summarization of findings for the wider scientific audience.
o Presented work (oral and poster) at nine professional meetings, which cultivated the ability to
effectively communicate data and ideas in a concise manner. List available upon request.
o Awarded status as ‘highlighted poster’ at International Conference on Endothelin, 2007.
o Young Investigator Award first prize winner for oral presentation at the XV International
Symposium on Atherosclerosis, 2009.
Undergraduate Researcher, University of Edinburgh, 2004. Wellcome Trust Vacation Scholarship
obtained to research the role of steroid hormones in wound healing, which has implications in the field of
diabetic complications. Gained co-authorship on a peer-reviewed publication.
Communication/Editing/Transferable Skills
Editor for BioMed World: Ad hoc editing of manuscripts written by Chinese authors for publication in
English language journals.
Demonstrator: Discover Science Festival, National Museum of Scotland, 2007-2008. Communicated
practical and theoretical information to children and parents to teach them about the cardiovascular
system and to encourage enthusiasm for science.
Organizer: Journal Club, University of Edinburgh, 2007-2009. Brought PhD students together to discuss
relevant and topical scientific papers.
Transferable Skills: Expanded transferable skill set through a variety of courses (e.g. effective
presentations and writing, project planning and ethics, principles of grant writing) during PhD and
postdoctoral careers. Full list of courses attended available upon request.
Computer Literacy: Proficient in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), reference
manager software (Endnote), statistical analysis software (GraphPad Prism) and medical literature
searches (Pubmed etc.). Experienced in both PC and Macintosh platforms.
Publications: Three peer-reviewed published papers, one submitted paper, and two papers under revision
for publication in top tier journals. A full list of publications is available upon request.
