American College of Sports Medicine – Clinical Exercise Physiologist TXT - 561-***-**** // EMAIL: ********@*********.*** Thank you for taking the time to review the above pages. My goal when preparing the above summary of qualifications was to be brief… because - Brevity is the preferred style of contemporary communication. We are in a rapidly evolving, credential morphing era of acceptance by hospitals, physicians, CMS and patients into the mainstream healthcare arena, therefore I am including the following declarations to provide continuity through the talent acquisition process. A Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) is an advanced health professional who designs and implements safe, individualized exercise programs for people with chronic diseases, injuries, or disabilities, using exercise as medicine to manage conditions, improve function, and prevent illness, working in hospitals, and research settings. They focus on therapeutic benefits for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, and respiratory issues, often post-rehab, differentiating from general fitness training by their scientific & clinical approach.
A Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) can work as a personal trainer in a gym, as their advanced education and certification surpass the requirements for standard personal training. They are well- qualified to handle both general fitness and high-risk populations, including those with chronic diseases or recovering from injuries.
Scope Of Practice:
• Assess & Test: Evaluate fitness, body composition, gait, and monitor vitals (telemetry, blood pressure).
• Prescribe Exercise: Create tailored plans for managing cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and neurological conditions
• Supervise & Educate: Guide patients during exercise, teach health management, and promote lifestyle changes.
• Collaborate: Work with doctors, dietitians, nurses, and other healthcare providers as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• 2025 CMS Status Update: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Provider Status, in Clinic and by Tele-Medicine
• 2026 CMS Status Update: Direct to Insurance Billing for Some service with a MD E&M referral. FRANK J. IANNOTTI, ACSM-CEP

Key Difference from Personal Trainers:
• Focus: CEPs specialize in therapeutic exercise for specific medical conditions, not just general fitness.
• Scientific Basis: They apply scientific evidence and monitor physiological responses closely.
• Scope: They provide post- operative rehabilitation care, helping patients transition to long-term self-management.
• Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs) require a master’s degree in Exercise Science, Health Science (Pre-Med) or Kinesiology, and extensive clinical training as a prerequisite to Board Certification
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required for passing the ACSM-CEP Certification exam.
• Clinical Internship Experience
o Minimum 1000 hours of hands-on, clinical experience (e.g., in a hospital, cardiac rehab, or chronic disease setting).
o ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is highly desirable, especially for cardiac rehabilitation.
• Key Skills
• Expertise in clinical exercise testing and prescription.
• Ability to monitor patients for cardiovascular and metabolic risks.
• Understanding of Pharmacology & Pathophysiology for chronic conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and conduction disorders.
