Resume:

Steve Kroll brings over ** years of audit, consulting, operations and financial leadership experience to top program and service delivery organizations. He has a proven record of identifying new revenue streams, strengthening and streamlining business operations, developing and accomplishing strategic program objectives.

Steve brings a breadth of experience that started with auditing major defense contractors with complex corporate structures and differing financial management systems; Deltek Cost Point system, Sage Intacct, Oracle’s ERP system (now NetSuite ERP); complex overhead/indirect allocation structures; and changes caused by mergers and acquisitions. At the Department of Veterans Affairs, my mind had to move from cost reimbursement contracts/cost-build-up, to crafting an audit program for Most Favored Customer pricing based on sales and charge-back methodology. This audit program is still in use 28 years later, which I have great pride in. I was put into a corrective action plan to a US Attorney by a contractor who was under investigation. There I learned preventative internal controls working along-side of Ernst and Young consultants, which I subsequently used throughout my career in helping over 45 organizations (USAID/CDC/DoD contractors and not-for-profits) enter and grow with US government funding. As a VP of International Operations, I utilize this technical skill as a private foundation entered USG funding with $100 million of funding, and as CFO this helped transition a not-for-profit from a 40-year history of assistance, to one receiving sub-contracts and bidding on contracts.

Having conducted project start-up workshops, office reviews, audits in 45 plus countries; Steve recognized he does not control a single transaction. It caused me as CFO to maximize use of preventative internal controls, implement cost allocation models that are understandable in countries of implementation that meets the needs of the organization from a “corporate” perspective. As a CFO, Steve is forward thinking and as a result works with business development/program development to grow revenues and expand impact of organizations from adding new programs and other sources of revenues (federal, foundations, etc). From a financial statement perspective, Steve builds relationships and supports subsidiary organizations and country offices to reduce closing of books and records in a timely basis. The reward for subsidiary organizations is timely quality support, and accurate budget versus actuals that can be relied upon.

In my consulting, I have always advised as if I am the client’s Chief Operating Officer, so that I own every recommendation that I make. Recently, Steve assisted a foundation ($125 million) with 119 Member Associations, 31 Collaborative Partners, in 151 countries; with 6 regional offices, utilizing NetSuite’s ERP system. The goal and accomplishment, was to maximize cost recovery, capture all financial transactions and allocations in the NetSuite system, generate management reports in a timely and accurate manner, and minimize risk in the event of a USG financial audit.

This CFO, auditor, VP of International Operations, consultant graduated from the Loyola of Maryland with a BA in Accounting. The CPA exam was passed and kept current until consulting practice was started 13 years ago. Steve Kroll and Associates, LLC sustained itself through referrals.

Stephen Kroll is available commencing end of October.
