Senior Manager of the 57 million dollar federally-funded No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Supplemental Educational Services (SES), providing after-school instruction in 300 schools and serving 30,000 students: Supervised a staff of 8 coordinators assigned to specific schools to ensure program implementation met program guidelines with fidelity; supervised 60 outside agencies providing instruction to students and facilitated their payment for services to the students; coordinated professional development for 600 teachers providing instruction to students via SES; responsible for all aspects of the SES budget and audits by the federal and state agencies overseeing NCLB.

Truancy Prevention and Attendance Improvement Coordinator: Supervised 100 schools to reduce truancy and improve attendance by providing strategies to principals and teachers that promote student attendance; teamed with alderman to help meet the every-day needs of families with school-age children to ensure student attendance; partnered with school counselors and social workers to provide counseling to truant students; provided parenting training to parents of truant students; worked with school nurses and medical organizations to provide health services to students truant due to health and wellness issues; trained school secretaries to enter student attendance data into the district’s data base.

Coordinator of the 13 million dollars federally-funded Reading First Program, providing professional development in best language arts and reading practices to K-3 teachers in 100 schools: Trained teachers in best-practices in reading and language arts; monitored instruction on a per-classroom basis; ensured budget guidelines were met.

Accountability Liaison: Worked out of the Office of Accountability overseeing 80 schools to ensure they spent state and local funds according to guidelines; visited more than 300 classrooms as a member of walk-through teams that provided assistance to teachers and principals to improve instruction.

Manager of the Truancy Hotline: Supervised a staff of 5 telephone operators who received calls via an 800 number from schools and the general public reporting truant students; supervised 20 off-duty police officers who followed up on the calls and visited the homes and locations of the reported truants and returned them to school. More than 2,000 truants were returned to school each year under my watch.
