Registered Pediatric Nurse

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist-Winston-Salem, NC January 2002 to April 2011

Here, It was the perfect example of finding a magical place to me as a child, dreaming about working here throughout my entire childhood, and climbing the proverbial career ladder! once I met all educational requirements, I was hired in the pediatric intensive care unit as well as the cardiac care and intermediate care units at Brenners Children’s Hospital as a Nursjng Assistant. This allowed me to gain absolutely priceless and precious knowledge and experience much further than any class or textbook could alone. I worked here while I finished my Associates Degree in Nursing at Forsyth Technical College as well as my Bachelor degree in Nursing specializing in Pediatrics and Traumas. I was then made not only a unit charge nurse (basically a manager that was in charge of patient to nurse ratios, assignments, unit policies and procedures, assisting other pediatric units with patients that were declining, and assisting my own staff nurses with their assignments that shift ensuring each and every patient got exemplary care) but I was also made a “Nurse Preceptor” for all new grads and hires, as well as being a team leader in designing an expedited version of this intense training for travel nurses. During this time, I literally learned to love life and connections to other people to be so very precious, I was a sponge who also adored soaking up every bit of medical knowledge I could gain surrounding the medical students and the attending physicians to learn lessons that would further my confidence, knowledge, and ability in particular areas. We got new things in every day being a tier 4 trauma center, one of only a few in our Nation, let alone the east coast. Our jobs didn’t end at the bedside however as many of these patients and their families had experienced life-changing events, and the children requiring substantially higher levels of care than when they came in. This required a significant amount of teaching to be given to the parents in order to properly discharge them home with their child so that they could be cared for at home. This was one of my favorite things to do because you got to watch very apprehensive and nervous parents in the beginning flourish into absolutely fabulous caretakers that had all the tools they needed by the end to quickly, efficiently, and lovingly care for their children in a new way then when they came in to us. I don’t typically find many things I’m talented at, however I did feel I had a special little niche for teaching and a patience, understanding, and compassion that is never ending. I absolutely loved making house calls and troubleshooting equipment, alongside a population that was in need of a little or a lot of help, but help given with tons of love and support, compassionate attention. Awards

Pediatric Nurse of the Year

May 2008

This award was granted to me by atrium health- Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for the outstanding job and performance I showed when caring for a young man receiving a heart implant. I stayed with his family in the waiting room for a total of 21 hours, the choice was that of my own as I had grown quite emotionally and spiritually connected to this young soul, and he had touched my life in ways that I knew he was only capable through God of doing. I was not being paid, for just so that I can be of comfort to them but I say because I wanted to due to the amount of worry I had about this major surgery and life- changing event, and I also knew that they had no family in this country at the time for much needed support. With the help of another cheeky nurse like myself, we were able to sneak this young man is close to the helicopter pad as we could get and watch the clouds spread apart in the darkness of midnight in the stillness of the moonlight, here is where we saw the small twinkling and heard the soft whirling of the chopper approaching the hospital. Anticipation, awe, worry, excitement, and mostly a peaceful love filled all of our faces, but especially his. He became that night, his very own beacon of light, one of the brightest lights I have ever seen shine in the dark (especially one that’s not electric or fed with batteries)! As I received my award at dinner, one evening close to Christmas after he had successfully undergone his implant and gotten through two more years of life, (it is here worth mentioning getting a girlfriend and going to prom and a new car on top of that!) I looked slightly down at him from the stage, his eyes twinkling lips snarled into muffled laughter because he knew how much I hated to publicly speak at the time, being able to experience such a beautiful energy twice in one lifetime and it’s very powerful understanding. It was him that was truly my gift, my gift for all the hard years of work and dedication I put in there with nothing, no amount of money, no material items, no even bragging rights that could compare to the rambunctious and beautiful energy that loved me so much for all the love and care I had given to him. This is one of my favorite stories regarding awards and certificates and accomplishments throughout my career as a nurse, for we all learn that our awards glow a little bit brighter, and look a little bit different than the rest of the worlds!

This group addresses everything from safer standards in practice to all the newest and best technologies to better patient outcomes. It also addresses ways we can improve quality of care and access to care for all patients regardless of insurance coverage because as we know today financial costs have risen and employment rates are down. Our economy is in a detrimental state and this very much affects the quality of life of all people.
