Stage 1 Upgrade Project (1997-1999)

I was fortunate enough to do my training during a Hwange Unit 1-4 C&I upgrade project execution period up to commissioning.

I was trained Basic Teleperm MEA Engineering courses for 5 weeks. I started practical involvement after a plant orientation and induction program on safety and health.

The Engineering system that I worked on included Graphic Engineering Tool with HP UNIX operating system, S5 Automation System AS220 EA, and the Operation System OS220 EA with SCO Unix operating System.

I was able to appreciate installation of Automation equipment and field instrumentation and the use of engineering drawings to diagnose plant defects during commissioning. CURRICULUM VITAE- Erick Ndlovu Pr. Eng

I was able to develop plant maintenance schedules and reliability and availability schemes for the running plant using the plant and equipment manuals from the Original Equipment Manufacturer recommendations and information from other experienced individuals.

Plant optimization and Change Management

After I had learnt the plant operations I was able to understand control loop tuning and optimization of the boiler controls as required by the employer. I carried out control and plant modifications as the burn in problems persisted in order to reduce down time due to unforeseen design flaws. I was involved in numerous running Plant Fault Diagnosis for Maintenance and Return To Service commissioning during this period. I would also carry out Process Control System Administration and Equipment Servicing as a support service to the Maintenance department.

I was attached to the Siemens Project Engineering team for two years in the Hwange Unit 5&6 C&I upgrade works and commissioning I was able to do Engineering works from Data capture, User requirement specification assessments and Basic Engineering Design Freeze to detailed design and Procurement of Equipment to Installation and commissioning.

Boiler Senior Project Engineer

While I had the responsibilities for the main project on stage 2 design and install the Allen Bradley PLC5 to run the Auxiliary Plant Systems such as the Cooling Water CW, Fuel Oil and Compressed Air plants.

The works carried out involved, Data compilation, I/O allocation to module racks and cabling, control logic design and testing, field instruments wiring and commissioning. I made final documentation (Drawings, Control philosophy and Maintenance Manuals). The plant was handed over to operating in time for the return to service of the first upgraded unit on stage 2.

After the C&I projects were completed I then joined the Maintenance Department full time as the C&I Engineer responsible for Plant Reliability,Availability and Monitoring of Units 1 to 4. I was responsible for the design of the Boiler Protection System as a study for the implementation at Medupi Power Station. I have used the information from the client ESKOM and my previous experience to come up with comprehensive technical documents for the implementation of the required Boiler protection standards (FFFR). My duties were to design hardware interface requirements with third party systems for the integration of the whole system.

I have good experience with plant optimization and successful modifications.
