Over the course of 40 years, I’ve been involved in the early learning experiences of young children. The last 33 have been as an owner and director of a daycare facility. In combination, there are added responsibilities that one has to tackle other than just a teacher. Having to manage every aspect of the business and provide detailed learning programs for the children has left me with a very diverse background. As an owner, I’ve had to manage the staff, payroll, time management, certification retention, building maintenance/upkeep, and property maintenance. As director, I established age specific learning plans for each classroom, provided materials for daily activities, created age specific projects to improve learning, and coordinated the daily plans for each classroom. There are many challenges associated with managing a daycare. Many of them just pop up out of nowhere, some very awkward, but they have to be dealt with in a timely and efficient manner. Over the past 40 years, I’ve had to deal with thousands of these issues and can pretty much take care of them. But, I also know when external help is needed to ensure a responsible outcome. Involving the parents of the daily activities of the children allows for them to interact with their child on events of the day and by creating that personal connection with the parent, ensures a healthy learning experience.
