I counseled children and families referred to me by parents, teacher, and sometimes by the children themselves. I used a variety of modalities: play therapy, role playing, joint creation of audio-visual aids, and storytelling. I involved parents to a great extent, and often in conjunction with the child in the same session.

I saw children who were referred to me by teachers for adjustment problems relating to school and/ or home issues, such as difficulty with discipline and following rules, parental issues, such as divorce, addiction, abuse, communication, etc. I also saw their parents, teachers and any administrators that were involved. I ran small groups regarding issues that the children attending had in common, such as divorce, or difficulty with following rules. In addition, I went into the classroom to give guidance lesson on various topics, such as My Body Belongs to Me. I involved the students in creating audio visual aids for these programs, which helped promote a safe atmosphere for discussion. When I accepted a job as a yoga teacher at Montgomery County Community College, I continued this approach of teaching from the vantage point of including the whole person, body, mind, and spirit, into the course. Many things were shared with the group and with me personally by using this approach that might otherwise not have been. Of course, I was often obliged to refer the college students to the Counseling Center for follow-up as well as the parents of school students to outside agencies. One significant accomplishment I had was setting up a peer-tutoring group, where volunteer students tutored students with academic weaknesses in certain areas.

Additional Information
For 18 years, I have been a yoga teacher at Montgomery County Community College. This position allowed me to use my counseling skills, as well as teaching college students a physical practice. It was a part time position which allowed me more time to devote to my family. It was at this time that my husband was first diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, so it was helpful to have the extra time to devote to his care.
