Specialized manufacturer of heat exchangers and tubing parts for air conditioning and refrigeration units.

Title: Health Safety & Environmental Manager-Engineer

Lead to the development and implementation of EHS integrated management system and continuous improvements to company’s first piloted manufacturing site in US.

Contracted as and HSE managing Consultant through Aerotek while beginning education towards Master’s in Occupational Safety and Health.

Managed all HSE responsibilities through training, auditing, and communications with associates towards following OSHA regulations, standards, other agency permits, and company policies, while mentoring full-time associate into improving specific safety operations practices (e.g., lockout-tagout procedures).

Participated in removal of biodiesel fuels and renewal foods offsite with DOT standards.

Mentored, trained, and shared best management practices with a full-time employed associate into their transfer from a member of operation to the full-time role of HSE Coordinator ensuring full conversant and knowledge of EHS responsibilities within the operational area of the companies’ operations.

Lead audits among sixteen US facilities towards the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS and HR work processes.

As reporting to Corporates Management Lead-Team and Financial Manager of US Operations, provided insight and information regarding safety and HR strategic objectives.

Provided training to facility senior management team members towards safety improvements to achieve efficiency and standardization of EHS and HR principles, policies, and standards along with interpretations in additional equipment within contracted projects per Environmental Agency standards.

Managed workers compensation cases through the AMA (American Medical Association) guideline. Closed many of the cases reducing future cost; acted as liaison assisting facility in WC cases.

Oversaw safety operations to maintain insurer compliance to limit and exclude fire explosions through dust combustions in US Wood Product operations.

Conducted risk assessments, identifying financial environmental controls reducing expenses: SUI (State Unemployment Insurance) - In 2011 revealed and corresponded with state Workforce Commissions in the determination of fraudulent unemployment claims. For example, discovered $66,740 over-charged unemployment benefit charges in Louisiana. Thus, the employer’s account was reaccredited. Other claims were denied immediately prior to benefits. Developed proper procedures in 9 US states SUI in appeals and tribunals.

Other responsibilities and accomplishments: Reorganized employee handbooks, maintained positive, successful transition employee benefit structure, and piloted revision and consolidation for Summary Plan Documents (e.g., retirement savings and pension plans).

Reason Leaving: Limited opportunity to return directly into facility operations specifically in HSE from the Corporate office as I began Masters in Occupational Health & Safety.

INTERNATIONAL PAPER COMPANY – Memphis, TN April 2000 – March. 2007

The world’s largest Paper and Forest Products Company, with over twenty-six billion dollars in annual sales and 80,000 employees worldwide.

Title: Environmental Health and Safety Manager

Managed all aspects of HSE in Georgetown, SC; Whitehouse, FL; and Folkston, GA reporting to Plant Manager(s) and the Corporate Division EHS manager responsible for all Environmental Health and Safety related activities for over four hundred employees at two (2) union facilities, and (1) union-free facility.

Maintained OSHA and EPA compliance through audits, good communications, team building, training and the development of policies and procedures to regulations, standards, and permits leading to no citations or no violations. A few accomplishments among many are the following: 1. Revamped safety program in Georgetown, SC) facility cutting Workers Compensation costs from $458,000 in 1999 to $4,000 in 2003. Total Incident Rate (TIR) reduced from 3.69 to 0.53 during same period. Led SC facility to go 11.5 months without a recordable, becoming the first winner of two awards simultaneously: the IP Division’s Safety Team Leadership Award and Safety Entrepreneur Award. The IP South Carolina facility achieved a level of #48 of 235 IP global facilities in safety 2003. 2. Built an integrated Environmental Health and Safety management system at two other facilities, cutting Workers Compensation runaway annual costs at Whitehouse from $315,000 in 2003 to $10,000 in 2005. Lowered TIR from 3.27 in 2003 to 0 in 2004. Eliminated annual Workers Compensation costs at Folkston from $115,000 in 2003 to $8,000 in 2005. Achieved a Zero Injury Rate at both IP facilities in 2004. All three operations moved into the top 10% of 235 facilities for lowest number of recordable injuries in International Paper global operations. 3. Achieved Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) 5 Star status through OSHA in 2004 at the IP Georgia Folkston facility.

Among direct management of health and safety responsibilities within the 3 former facilities, I managed capital projects; furthermore, compliance calendars and structured team for all environmental permits and plans responsibilities were developed to maintain compliance of Title V (air emissions), SWPP, SPCC, Hazardous Waste management, and waste disposal. Net Results: Zero (0) citations and (0) notice of violations (NOVs).

Supervised six general laborer clean-up crew staff members while managing EHS responsibility in Georgetown, SC. Promoted cleaner and safer work environment identifying and rectifying several potential hazards (e.g., guarding). Exceptional Gallup Survey exceeding Company average rating of 3.78 to 4.54 rating.

Conducted and assisted participation in HSE audits at several other IP regional facilities in NC, AL, SC, and TX with responsibilities for identification and rectifying potential seen hazards along with sharing best management practices.
