“Jack of All Trades” may be an antiquated phrase, but the dynamic attributes it describes are invaluable assets for any organization. If they can find one. The modern labor pool is conditioned to specialization. Candidates are ranked along a single-skill dimension, discernible only by magnitudes of advanced degrees, years of experience, and geographic scarcity. Companies buy the best deal for lbs.of skill per salary dollar. Great for enterprise scale behemoths commanding billions in market cap. But if one’s company is facing any/either/all of explosive growth, high-innovation competition, consolidation, increased regulation, or simple cash flow restrictions-- this hiring method is deadly.

How much would it cost to onboard a revenue analyst, a content author/editor, a leadership consultant, staff accountant, and a technical salesperson? Someone who is equally comfortable creating statistical models as they are prospecting accounts on electrical/telco construction sites? That is the investment opportunity presented here.

My current career is the latest in a series of roles where I’ve been hired during startup, and worked through the rapid growth years to see the company become a profitable small-to- medium organization. What I’ve missed in corporate politics education, I’ve traded for frontline operations and trial-by-fire management. In 15 years since graduating from the University of Denver, my formula for success spanning industry and job title has distilled to simple maxims:

1.Learn like your job depends it all the time

2.Be fluent in listening, humble enough to use it

3.The worst team beats the best player

4.Treat everyone like they’re the CEO, and they’ll teach you to become one.

5.Motivational maxims are only pithy to those who lack the discipline to live them.
