I have also been working on book called Wanderings, focusing on my 13 years outside of the U.S.
2021-2023 Copy Editor The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Zenger News Service Copy edited news, business and feature stories on a full-time remote basis for Nevada’s leading news outlet and for the Austin, Texas-based digital news service. 2015-2020 Chief Copy Editor The Arab Weekly, London/Tunis Edited and rewrote stories for a newspaper focusing on the Arab world with the news in London, New York City and Washington the main points of coverage interest elsewhere.
2013-2015 Copy Editor The South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Edited stories for the Hong Kong-based newspaper with a large reach in mainland China and Southeast Asia.
2008-2013 Senior Editor/Writer The National, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Edited and wrote stories for the foreign section of the English-language newspaper. 2001-2006 Copy Editor The Washington Post, Washington, DC Worked as a copy editor, primarily on the Foreign Desk. Wrote occasional opeds, news and feature stories for various sections of the newspaper. 2000-2006 Adjunct Professor Catholic University, Washington, DC Taught a variety of editing and reporting courses, including one on the media and the underclass. Also have taught at the University of Maryland, Shenandoah University and Howard University.

Took the train across the United States to learn the views of the often forgotten and those the pollsters too often miss during the Bush/Gore presidential race. My University of Maryland students participated by interviewing fellow students on various campuses and won a national award for their efforts. 1995-1999 Editor/Columnist Scripps Howard News Service, Washington, DC Selected and edited stories that appeared on the Scripps-McClatchy Western Service wire and the Scripps Howard News Service wire. Wrote a column, most often focusing on social issues.
I have also been the editorial page editor of three daily newspapers. Journalism awards
The ones I am most proud of and that might have made a significant difference are:
• Editorials I wrote as part of the Asbury Park Press’s ABA Silver Gavel Award- winning project on the need to account for all deaths in police custody.
• Editorials that highlighted the Manhattan Mercury’s efforts to raise money for flood victims that won the Kansas Press Association’s top honor.
• Similar honors for an investigative series I did with Erin Perry focusing on the procedural flaws in universities’ systems for investigating sexual assault allegations.
• Virginia Press Association recognition for the Potomac News editorial campaign that I led to get state compensation for David Vasquez, a man imprisoned for nearly five years for a murder he did not commit.
