BHIE system is an integrated set of servers, systemic network configurations, and COTS products, all of which support the logical functions of the BHIE Framework (BHIE FW) Code. The Framework Code is a set of Java archives, which are deployed into the configured environments and perform the logical functions that are defined as the BHIE Framework. Because the Production deployment of the Framework Code supports real-time, live-data, patient record access, the code base must pass expected rigor for stable production software as defined by VA and DOD standards.
●Responsible for the white box testing of bi-directional health information exchange (BHIE), which is a middleware framework that provides secure, bidirectional, real time interagency exchange of clinical data and patient demographics between the VA and DOD health information systems

Thus, with the exception of Healthcare Artifact and Image Management Solution (HAIMS) artifacts, BDA allows all the data that the legacy Framework retrieves to be exchanged between the VA, AHLTA, SHARE, and Theater Medical Data Store (TMDS)—and much more efficiently.
