EDUCATION AND TRAINING

FROM 08/2016 -07/2018

• Master of Science in architecture at UNL, NE, USA Force-Driven Weave Patterns for Shell Structures in Architectural Design Under the Supervision of Professor David Newton

Lincoln, Nebraska July, 2018

Thesis:

https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/archthesis/183/

The use of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) in the discipline of architecture opens new possibilities for the construction of architectural components. CFRP has been explored mainly in engineering fields, such as aeronautics, automotive, ballistic and marine engineering. CFRP has also been explored in the discipline of archi- tecture in the construction of shell structures because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and low-cost. There is, however, limited research on how structural analysis can be used to inform weave patterns for shell structures using CFRP. Further, previous research in the field has not performed physical structural tests to validate which force driven weave patterns perform best. This thesis addresses this gap by contributing a methodology for the creation of CFRP weave patterns from structural analysis and their validation through physical testing. Specifically, this thesis addresses three main problems: Firstly, under- standing and analyzing the structural behavior of a shell structure through computation; Secondly, the creation of a weaving pattern of carbon fiber optimized for structural perfor- mance; the third part seeks to translate the digital model into fabricated prototypes. The results of this research show that force-flow derived patterns perform best. Consequently, force-flow is the information we should implement to create a more efficient force-driven weave pattern in shell structures.

Computer skills:

•Workshop on energy efficiency and the built environment at [Technische Universität Berlin] 2013.

•Workshop ACADIA 2017 [MIT Computational Research in Architecture and Structures]. http://2017.acadia.org/schedule.html

During this workshop participants learn how to address advanced research questions in architecture, structures, and digital fabrication through computation. On the first day, we will set up a development environment for scientific programming that will be used throughout the workshop, followed by a

“scientific Python 101” and an introduction to compas, an open source, Python-based framework for “computational research in architecture and structures”. The introduction covers the key concepts of the compas framework and a series of representative code examples. The second day, is a step-by- step breakdown of the computational aspects of one of the recent core projects of the Block Research Group. The final day is a hackathon during which the participants have the chance to explore compu- tational solutions to their own research problems with the help of the workshop tutors.

• Workshop FIBROUS AGENCY Florence July 2017. [ZAHA HADID Architects]. https://www.professionearchitetto.it/formazione/notizie/23872/Encodedfields-Fibrous-Agency-work- shop-di-design-avanzato-con-gli-architetti-di-Zaha-Hadid-Architects-e-Coop-Himmelblau The workshop was divided into two complementary parts. In the first part of the workshop, we looked at field conditions and how to generate or design such fields that can help structure a possible urban condition. The second part of the workshop was built upon the first phase. Students will be required to select one archetype (high rise tower) generated in the first part, which will be used as a study mod- el to develop a detailed facade study. In the first part of the workshop, we will be exploring dynamic systems, geometric systems, and network theories to generate and design an abstract field condition. A field builds complexity upon its capacity to integrate modularity, gradients, and differentiation within a highly legible and coherent system. The system builds up complexity based on a series of sin- gle redundant component (rule) operations. The degrees of change within the system will be based on a simple set of rules (environmental) that would drive parametric versioning and typological differen- tiation. Simple operations that would span variations from an initial state will give rise to high level of complexity.
