Laboratory Test Skills
Participate in the handling and manipulation of delicate instruments and materials including regular manipulation of very small samples requiring a high level of hand/eye coordination to ensure valid patient results
Involved with the identification of priority requests and process them accordingly to ensure that all clinical materials is stored according to the department policies and in an appropriate manner
Process analysis of all referred samples in accordance with agreed standard as set by the institute of Medical Laboratory Science
Process, refer, or prepare for safe storage a variety of biological specimens on a daily basis that may contain high risk organism ensuring that all clinical materials are disposed of according to departmental policies and in an appropriate manner to handle hazardous chemicals in reagent according to COSHH regulation
Professionally handle enquiries regarding specimens and results from patients, doctors and other service users to identify specimen and/or requests that may cause problems (e.g. health and safety, identification, sample quality and/or requesting inappropriate or special tests)
Deal with diverse and a complex variety of equipment, reagent and procedures; perform a wide variety of both automated and non-automated complex medical laboratory operations including setting up, maintaining and checking equipment for correct oppression e.g. Microscope and complex analyzers, Micro Scan Bactec, PCR Machines, Gene Expert, Bactalert
Sort, identify, and keep record of receipts of specimens with appropriate input of patients’ data into laboratory information system
Maintain appropriate documentary records for equipment and consumables including service records, monitoring stock levels and report deficiencies to appropriate senior staff Results and Reports
Generate reviews, validate (at Technical and Professional level) and report results
Communicate critically abnormal findings, in accordance with departmental policies to persons authorized to receive them
Explain problems relating to validity of result and decisions related to the need of further testing, referral of specimen or isolate and refer to senior staff if required.
Identify the need to issue preliminary reports and potential delays in meeting turnaround time, as applicable.
Liaise with senior staff and engineers as appropriate in the event of analyzing problems of failure that might not be resolved with basic trouble shooting.
