Electronics Program, Graduated June 1980

ACHIEVEMENTS: As a design tech I needed to design custom hardware and software to achieve the desired goal. This includes PIC microprocessor design and programming. Most times interfacing to a PC running VB or C++ program’s I’ve written. In assisting other groups which lacked my skill set I designed an addressable SPI bus capable of controlling 255 slave boards (PC master). Also wrote VB code to interface to devices under development with SPI ports. To expedite evaluation I designed and programmed a stack of 8 high resolution power supplies (+-16 volt 500uv resolution --- 16 bit), of course with a VB control program. In a personal project I designed and built an electric vehicle including the design of the motor controller and battery charging system

(functional).

In the time spent with Cherry Semiconductor I have been involved in the upgrade and modification of several handlers and testers. Some of which being the relocation of the sensors on I have redesigned some of the sources for the VERY old Teradyne J259 testing system. This is needed to make the system less susceptible to noise and to eliminate spikes generated when the source was ramped. This also increased system reliability.

While employed with Texas Instruments there was a need for a logic board tester. The logic boards(when defective) would cause the programmable source that they control to destroy themselves. I designed and built a PC-based tester for those boards with the ability to be adapted for use with many other types of logic boards. I transferred to the LTX probe and final test area where I had the duties of technician and assistant product engineer. While in this capacity I was sent to Taipei Taiwan to assemble the new LTX equipment sent there and to start up three products for testing. I also developed and taught a class covering the machine and products.

As a personal venture I designed a PC-based curve tracer meant to compete with the Huntron Tracker 5000. This design is capable of trouble shooting and board(analog of digital) in a powered down mode(on the bench). With this design and a partner who wrote the program and performed the salesman function we formed a company called Professional Digital Components. This product met with limited success due to our limited advertising budget. Patents were applied for but we decided not to proceed when sales did not meet our expectations(we had patient pending status).
