Work Experience

Early Childhood Special Education Teacher

SDUSD - San Diego, CA

September 2007 to Present

I currently work as an Early Childhood Special Education teacher for the San Diego Unified School District. I work with children between the ages of 3-5 years old who have been diagnosed with a variety of disabilities, although most have been diagnosed with Autism. I act as the Case Manager for approximately 16 students throughout the school year and I collaborate with therapy providers and parents to develop quality IEPs for my students. I deliver Specialized Academic Instruction that is closely aligned with the CA Preschool Learning Foundations in a highly structured setting to ensure student progress and to help students develop independence and Kindergarten readiness skills. I work closely with families to ensure students are making progress at home as well as in the school setting. It is important to me to ensure parents and families understand the value of advocating for their child so they continue to receive the most appropriate level of service in the least restrictive environment, leading to a more positive and successful educational career. At the same time I recognize the need to communicate with families in a sensitive manner with respect to their cultural and socioeconomic background. Progress reports are developed with the IEP team every twelve weeks to track student progress and to determine if the delivery of instruction needs to be altered in order to meet the needs of my students. I am able to implement a variety of research based teaching strategies based on Applied Behavior Analysis and develop individual programs to ensure each student is able to learn and make progress toward their IEP goals. I consistently gather data for each student in the areas of pre-academics, social-emotional skills, fine-motor skills, adaptive skills and behavior in order to track progress throughout the school year for progress reports and high quality IEPs. In addition I train the para-educators in my classroom to learn teaching strategies to implement during small groups, support me during whole group instruction and to take important data on each student. Before each annual IEP I make sure to assess each student using a variety of assessment tools that include behavior checklists, review DRDP's (Desired Results Developmental Profile completed two times a year), the Brigance Early Childhood III, the Vineland II, and complete parent interviews and teacher interviews from other therapists (i.e. School Psychologist, Speech Language Pathologist, the Occupational Therapist, etc.).
