As a federal employee I have performed work for two separate testing programs, U.S Military Entrance Processing Command (MEPCOM) and Civilians, each with different documentation and processing requirements and regulations:
Works independently and makes decisions on acceptance or rejection of specimens submitted for testing after careful examination and evaluation of urine specimen bottles, chain of documents, DD form 2624 and any additional material submitted. Ensures specimens are inspected for damage boxes and possible tampering, noting the condition of the box and shipping material of the handling of custody document.
Annotate any existing discrepancies on custody forms. Evaluates and verifies identification, batch and specimen numbers on chain of custody document against bottle label determining what information is missing or erroneous and annotates information on all pertinent documentation. Assign a unique laboratory accession number to each specimen. Verifies all information and pours aliquots of each specimen for initial screening. Pulls and verifies all information on sequential lists and pour presumptive positive urine specimens for re-screen or confirmation of AMPS, D/IAMPS, 6-MAM, THC, BZE, and PCP.
Maintain elaborate and detailed custody documentation at all times to be used if necessary in a court of law. Ensures that all submitted specimens are maintained under forensic conditions until the testing process is completed. Dispose of negative specimens and place all confirmed positive in long term frozen storage following forensic protocols. Performs duties with minor supervision and must make daily independent decisions and judgments.
Organize urine sample in batching trays, matching the sequential order as listed on their chain of custody documents, while incorporating blind quality control specimens into the batch. Accessioning labels are generated using an automated, computerized thermal transfer printer. Performs customer and administrative duties such as filing paperwork and annotation logs. Complete understanding of the laboratory's operating procedures for the accessioning and screening areas and familiarization with Navy's Drug Testing Program.
General understanding of chemical laboratory terminology used with laboratory technicians and chemists. Awareness of the importance of accuracy and attention to detail required in completing paperwork in a forensic environment. Restock supplies as required and complies with NAVOSH and OSHA standards, and applicable rules.
