Southern Illinois Healthcare-Carbondale, IL
April 2023 to April 2024
I recently worked with the head of pulmonology and critical care. We use epic electronic health records. My day consists of rooming between 15 to 20 patients a day when my provider is in clinic, when he is on call I usually pre-chart for the following week to ensure that all orders are complete by patients before their upcoming appointment. My provider usually does 20 minute appointments so it’s best to pre-chart to prevent keeping patients waiting or rushed. Empathy is most important with our patients mainly because most are terminally ill. Rooming patients are just like anywhere else, you’re going to do reason for visit, med rec, updating medical history asking and symptoms as well as concerns and vitals. We also do some injections mainly flu vaccines low-dose and high-dose and then we have some Biologics to help with patients with severe asthma or chronic COPD. Since working in pulmonology and critical care I have learned a lot about the specialty because my provider is always teaching, explaining diagnostic studies such as CXR, MRI, CT. I’ve gotten verbal praise from my provider as well as my office manager for how thorough, professional and compassionate I am. I’ve also received letters and emails from patients praising how understanding I am to their situation but most of all my empathy. Some of the duties the job consists of are completing prior authorizations for medication’s faxing orders, working the in basket, delivering result notes by phone, addressing patient calls and concerns and refilling in prescriptions.
