I have about 2 -1/2 years design experience in refining and over 10 years
experience as a technical service engineer (a.k.a. process engineer). I have about a year experience with Process Safety Management. I have done environmental project work and technical service support. Total project/process design experience is over five years. I have over a year experience with FCC, over two years with HF Alkylation, and about six months experience with delayed coking. Total Hydrotreating and Hydrocracking experience is almost three years. CCR Platforming experience is over two years and SMR Hydrogen plant experience is about 1 -1/2 years. For five years I was in a 100% travel situation including three years overseas. I have five years experience as a commissioning engineer. I have two years of pilot plant experience testing catalyst.
I have over three years experience in military software systems as a software maintenance facility project engineer/manager.
Since December of 1998 I have worked on many things but always with the intention of returning to oil refinery engineering. I have been semi-retired and living off investments. I am tired of Michigan and ready to engineer again.
EXPERIENCE:
Project Engineer, 4/98 to 12/98
Contracted to Hunt Refining Company, Tuscaloosa, AL
Design, purchase, build, and install EPA MACT requirements such as flare monitoring and hydrocarbon sampling points. Troubleshooting on delayed coker, hydrotreaters, Platformer and crude unit. Worked a turnaround mainly on a delayed coker. Worked with contractors frequently on the MACT projects.
Project/Process Design Engineer, 6/95 to 2/97
Ashland Petroleum Company, Catlettsburg Refinery, KY
Suggested, optimized, designed and built a piping revamp that had a ROI of about 300% the first time it was used. After these changes, the kerosene hydrotreater can temporarily replace a naphtha hydrotreater until repairs are completed. Worked on the replacement of worn out and obsolete flare system and minimized cost.
Technical Service Engineer, 1/90 to 6/95
Ashland Petroleum Company, Catlettsburg Refinery, KY
Discovered that thermally cracked naphtha was plugging a hydrotreater reactor that had required a shutdown every six to eight months. Identified three possible solutions: eliminated the first, recommended they try chemical treatment and if not successful, the cracked naphtha could be sent to the feed drum of a diesel hydrotreater. Suggested that a kerosene hydrotreater could be used to temporarily replace any of three naphtha hydrotreaters.
Supported an area that has two naphtha, two distillate and one VGO Hydrotreater, a CCR Platformer and a Penex unit. Worked on HF Alkylation turnarounds at Catlettsburg and Canton, Ohio. Worked on Advanced Control support of process units at Catlettsburg and Canton.
Wrote operating manuals and trained operators in advanced control for a gasoline blender revamp. Completed four Hazard and Operability studies (HAZOP): Naphtha Hydrotreater, HF Alkylation, Crude Preheat revamp, LPCCR Platformer.
Assigned to support an area including HF Alkylation, FCC Gas Con, Saturate Gas Plant, MTBE, Di-olefin Hydrogenation, Butane Isomerization, treating and Polymerization. Most work was related to the HF Alkylation unit.
Tasks included pre-startup work on a revamp of a vacuum pitch plant and a lube oil hydrotreater. Technical support of a petrochemical complex that included Cumene and Sulfolane units and small specialty hydrotreaters. Worked on crude units, Reduced Crude Cracking and CCR Platforming.
Project Engineer/Manager, 7/86 to 11/89 (Electrical Engineer)
McClellan AFB, Sacramento, CA
Software Project Engineer for a military communication system: digital computer hardware, telecommunications systems, software maintenance and engineering, DEC, Hewlett-Packard, Unisys computers and equipment, MITRE Corporation signal simulators, Communications Nodal Control System (CNCE), AN/TSQ-111. Coordinated between several contractors and the Civil Service organization and completed start up ahead of schedule. Completed classes in the ADA language and graduate classes in digital signal processing, advanced microprocessors and digital control theory. Delivered updated CNCE software to Air Force. I had about fourteen Unisys software contractors and several civil service working for me.
Technical Service Engineer, 1/80 to 1/85 (Chemical Engineer)
UOP Process Division, Des Plaines, IL (Field Service)
Hands on experience during the initial process startup including construction check out, pre-commissioning, startup, writing operating and emergency procedures, supervision of startup, normal operation, and guarantee tests.
Expertise with CCR Platformers, Hydrotreaters, Amine and Merox, and Hydrogen plants. During unit startup used digital control systems, electronic, and pneumatic control systems. Rotating equipment in the refineries includes centrifugal, axial, and reciprocating compressors, reciprocating and centrifugal pumps, electric motors, and steam turbines. Experience includes reactors, high temperature furnaces, steam boilers, and fractionation/
absorption/stripping/extraction columns.
