Resume:

Dear Hiring Committee,

As a dedicated educator with 15 years of experience in Career and Technical Education (CTE) digital media instruction and 30+ years in the graphic design and media industry working for various companies such as Omsi, Sega, Ubisoft Doc Marten’s, Moutntain Travel Sobek, and ICU Eyewear to name a few. I am eager to bring my expertise to a new graphic multi media design position. My passion for hands-on, project-based learning and curriculum development aligns seamlessly with the position your company is now looking to fill. In my past Ida B. Wells, (Wilson), and current roles at, Cleveland and Grant High Schools in Portland, I have developed and implemented curricula in animation, photography, video production, and advanced digital design, aligning coursework with industry standards and college credit requirements. Previously, at Ida B. Wells, I established the Digital Media Design program, establishing articulation with Portland Community College’s

(PCC) Multimedia curriculum (MM 230 & 260). This collaboration enabled numerous students to earn college credits, with many continuing into higher education and now many in digital media careers that I keep in touch. Additionally, I redesigned the curriculum to align with Common Core State Standards and national CTE assessments, ensuring students graduate with industry-relevant skills. Beyond instruction, I have previously collaborated with PCC faculty to streamline the transition for high school students into PCC’s digital media programs. I have also collaborated with Oregon state partnerships, integrating industry project-based methodologies into classroom teaching. Holding a Doctorate in Education Administration and an Oregon Department of Education Administrator License, I bring leadership, strategic planning, and a commitment to fostering inclusive, industry-relevant learning experiences in digital media design classes.

CTE programs with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world hands-on application resonates with my approach to my own design philosophy. I strive to create a dynamic design environment where students are encouraged to experiment, develop critical thinking skills, and apply their knowledge in professional settings. My experience integrating industry-driven projects and working directly with students to build portfolios in capstone classes that meet industry standards that further support CTE Career Pathways mission to prepare students for meaningful careers in digital media. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experiences and innovative design approach to teaching digital media education can contribute to your company’s design position you are offering. I thank you for your time and consideration—and I look forward to the possibility of joining your company. Best regards,

Dr. Martin R. Douglass

Statement of Philosophy

Education thrives on diversity—not just in backgrounds but also in perspectives, learning styles, and creative approaches. I embrace these differences in my classroom as a driving force for innovation, collaboration, and artistic growth. As an educator, I recognize and embrace diverse ways of thinking, learning, and expressing ideas, creating an inclusive and dynamic classroom environment where all students can thrive. My teaching philosophy centers on fostering student engagement through hands-on, project-based learning. Digital media is an evolving field requiring technical proficiency and creative problem-solving skills. I emphasize real-world applications, encouraging students to experiment, take risks, and develop their unique artistic voices while mastering industry-standard tools and techniques. For instance, I implemented a capstone project in my digital media courses where students worked in teams to create professional-grade multimedia portfolios while entering national and state-wide contests. This real-world approach fostered collaboration and critical problem-solving skills, preparing students for industry expectations. Collaboration is key to learning. I strive to create an environment where students support each other, exchange ideas, and build critical thinking skills. I encourage open discussions, constructive critique, and teamwork to reflect the collaborative nature of the digital media industry. My college design experiences emphasized hands-on learning and industry-aligned curricula, values that I integrate into my teaching by developing projects that mirror real-world media production workflows. Additionally, I am committed to continuous learning. The digital media landscape changes rapidly, and I prioritize staying current with emerging trends and technologies. Integrating the latest advancements into my teaching ensures that students graduate with relevant skills that prepare them for professional success. I am currently focusing on the latest Rive and Figma platforms through on line courses. Ultimately, my goal as an educator and designer is to empower students and oneself to become confident, creative professionals who are ready to contribute to the digital media industry. By fostering a growth mindset and integrating the latest industry trends, I aim to prepare CTE students for both immediate career success and lifelong learning adaptability in this fast evolving field.
