Moral Injury in the Forensic Psychiatric Population September 2021– Current

PIs: Margaret McKinnon, McMaster University and Bruno Losier, St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton Research Aim: Developed and validated the first ever screener tool to measure moral injury in the not criminally responsible population.

§ Completed human ethics applications for four psychiatric hospitals across Ontario (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Centre, and St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton).

§ Conducted 174 one-to-one interviews (with psychological assessments) for inpatient and outpatient participants who presented a diverse range of psychological diagnoses, including schizophrenia, personality disorders, and psychosis, often with comorbid conditions.

§ Completed the data analysis for the validation of the developed scale which included exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

§ Tested the MI constructs within the screener which involved a comprehensive assessment using convergent and divergent measures to ensure the scale's robustness and accuracy in capturing the dimensions of moral injury.

§ Revisions are being made on manuscript to be published early March 2025 and preliminarily results have been presented at McMaster Research Conference. Shame and Guilt in the Offending Population

September 2021–Current

PIs: Margaret McKinnon, McMaster University and Bruno Losier, St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton Research Question: What do we know of the impact of shame and guilt on psychopathology and criminal recidivism in the offending population?

§ Conducted comprehensive searches in five prominent academic databases: PsycINFO, Web of Science, Sociological Abstracts, Medline, and Embase.

§ Screened articles for inclusion based on English language, peer-reviewed status, and a focus on empirical research involving individuals who have committed criminal acts while distinguishing between shame and guilt experiences.

§ Conducted data extraction and content analysis following the Covidence Systematic Review Management approach.

§ Initiated the screening process with 1,158 identified articles, reducing them to 467 after eliminating duplicates.

§ Applied inclusion and exclusion criteria to titles and abstracts, resulting in 92 articles for further analysis.

§ Analyzed these selected articles for theme development, considering publication details, study design, and the intended audience or purpose of each study.

§ Demonstrated the ability of the Context Maintenance and Retrieval model to account for modality effects

§ Revisions being made on manuscript to submit to journals early next year and results presented at the CAPL 2023 conference

Perceptual similarity of own- and other-race faces using Psiz Computational Modelling September 2022 – Current PI: Jim Tanaka, University of Victoria Research Aim: Investigate perceptual similarity judgments in individuals, with a specific focus on the influence of cross-race and same-race effects.

§ Created the experimental stimuli using Adobe photoshop and use the SHINE (spectrum, histogram, and intensity normalization and equalization) toolbox for MATLAB, which to control a number of image properties separately or simultaneously.

§ Completed human ethics for project and conducted recruitment of participants.

§ Completing data analysis by using Javascript code to gather similarity judgments for visual stimuli and fed this data into the Python program "Psiz" to create similarity models for both own- and other- race faces.

§ Commentary was published based on these theories (Lall & Tanaka, 2023) and a more detailed chapter is in press (Tanaka & Lall, (in press))

Improving police lineup construction using psychological embeddings: An objective measure of perceptual similarity

September 2022 – December 2022

PI: Jim Tanaka, University of Victoria

Co-Investigator: Ryan FitzGerald, Simon Fraser University Research Aim: Investigate perceptual similarity judgments in individuals, with a specific focus on the influence high similarity fillers versus low similar filler faces in police line up construction.

§ Coded for the Python program "Psiz" for the facial recognition experiment.

§ Audited a course titled "The Psychology of Concepts, Categories & Decision Making" at University of Victoria to learn how to code the Psiz program.

§ Recruited university participants at University of Victoria

§ Completed data analysis for this project by using Javascript code to gather similarity judgments for visual stimuli and fed this data into the Python program "Psiz" to create similarity models for both own- and other-race faces.

§ Present results at NOWCAM conference.
