DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY – TSA
GEORGE BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT
HOUSTON, TEXAS
3/2012 TO PRESENT SALARY $40,397 Annual
TRANSPORTATION SECURITY OFFICER
I ensure security and protection of air travelers by identifying dangerous objects in baggage and on passengers, and prevent any dangerous objects being transported onto aircraft or into the sterile area. I am dedicated in performing my duties in a courteous and professional manner
While performing my duties as a TSO, I am hyper-vigilant, watching for any anomalies of passengers, stakeholders, aircraft personnel, airport workers and any suspicious items on the x-ray, while performing bag searches, and when I am at the Ticket Document Check (TDC) positions. My vigilance isn’t limited to the checkpoint, from arrival to the airport until my departure, I continue these characteristics of keeping our airport safe.
When working as a Playbook Officer, I worked the passengers boarding the aircraft at the gates looking for anomalies, boarding passes, checked vehicle perimeter gates verifying all employee credentials, checking vehicles inside, outside and underneath for any anomalies prior to entrance to the Area of Operation (AOA). Another aspect is to check for signs of any breaches in security fences, gates and airport security doors. I also checked all credentials at AOA doors and inside the airport sterile area. I have consistency of these aforementioned qualities which are key to preventing any and all issues that could be threats.
When on the checkpoint, I make sure my command presence is “in place” and when interacting with other co-workers and all other entities that traverse through the checkpoint, my people skills are very important. For example, when speaking with another TSO regarding an error, I make sure my delivery is a positive and productive one by explaining the exact procedure(s) in a calm and professional manner.
I use my management skills while performing my duties on the checkpoint by engaging co-workers with conflict resolution, as well, with passengers and stakeholders. I mentor and train other co-workers to confirm I am ensuring proper Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and assisting them in making the checkpoint an efficient and accurate process to secure any issues or threats.
I have been proactive in learning all facets of the layers of a checkpoint and the duties of Lead Transportation Security Officers (LTSO), and Supervisory Transportation Security Officers (STSO) duties. I've created daily rotation sheets for lane assignments, record hourly throughput numbers from the Walk Through Metal Detector (WTMD) and Automatic Imaging Technology (AIT’s). I perform procedures for lost and found, bagging and tagging with control numbers, by entering those items into AIM. I have entered these numbers into the Performance Management Information System {PMIS).
I have opened, calibrated equipment and closed checkpoints, putting up shields, locking ADA gates, accounting for all equipment, Sensitive Security Information (SSI) and radios, making sure they are charging properly, as well as, inventory of all equipment. I calibrate all Explosive Trace Detector (ETD) machines, set up burn in, clean and load with full roll of paper to prepare for the morning shift opening. I remove keys from X-ray machines at closing and lock them in the secure key box. I walk the checkpoint and make sure all machines and equipment are properly secured for closing of the checkpoint per SOP.
I am currently a member of the Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) Team, and conduct monthly HF radio communications from IAH to FEMA, Government Entities, and DOD stations along with setting up of equipment and satellite phone communications. I am a certified Playbook Officer and conduct Risk Based Security (RBS) security check at all location throughout the airport.
