Zagros Petrochemical Company in line with the implementation of Iran’s third economic, social, and cultural development plan and with the aim of reaching the global markets and to empower the company obtaining a considerable share of the methanol global markets, and taking into consideration the abundance of rich gas resources in the South Pars region and the strategic location of the region, the company’s production complex and site of was constructed in Assaluyeh, in the South Pars Special Economic Energy Zone. Moreover, to supply the required energy, the complex has been designed in a way so as to utilize the maximum energy produced in the synthesis reactors as well as the recycled energy generated in the reforming unit, and by doing so, approximately 205 tons of steam per hour with a pressure of 40 bars is produced and sold. The contract for basic engineering, detailed engineering, and equipment purchase was concluded with a consortium consisting of companies Lurgi, Germany, and PIDEC, Iran, and all activities pertaining to the implementation of construction and installation operations were undertaken by Iranian contractors. With regards to the contract with Lurgi and PIDEC, the first phase project commenced in 2001 and was completed in 2006 with an annual capacity of 1,650,000 tons of AA-grade methanol. With the completion of the second phase implementation in 2009, Zagros Petrochemical Company became one of the five largest producers of methanol worldwide with an annual production capacity of 3,300,000 tons.
