Intelligence Research Analyst 2011 – Present

Conduct all-source research and analysis on the Western Hemisphere, Central Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa for the Bureau of Diplomatic Security’s Office of Intelligence and Threats Analysis. Specifically, evaluate cables derived from the US Intelligence Community to identify threats to Americans and US diplomatic and consular equities abroad posed by political violence, terrorism, and crime.

Draft analytical briefs on a range of topics, such as insurgent groups and their tactics, techniques, and procedures; regional trends covering political violence and instability (also forecasting future trends); and salient economic developments and trends.

Brief senior department officials, including assistant secretaries, ambassadors, and regional security officers, as well as military leaders and congressional members and their staff on emerging terrorist threats and political instability.

Teach courses on violent extremism to foreign-country police and security officials at State Department-sponsored International Law Enforcement Academy seminars around the world.

Liaise with the Overseas Security Advisory Council to promote security cooperation between American private sector interests worldwide.

Performed extended rotation at the Bureau of International Organizations, where I tracked African Union-related developments, to include organizational elections and reform, and peacekeeping operations on the continent, as well as rotation to the Bureau of Intelligence & Research, during which I tracked emerging trends with respect to terrorism in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Tracked trade issues before the WTO, typically regarding agricultural policy (food aid administration, sugar, etc.) and international development (global food/commodity inflation and biofuels (ethanol). Also advised British companies on a host of market access issues like export controls and Treasury-led Committee on Foreign Investment in the US.

Served as Secretary of the Cotton Club, a maritime association comprising representatives of member states of 13 major maritime nations and conducted outreach to transportation officials and congressional staff members on behalf of the group. Also served as UK representative to the Consultative Subcommittee on Surplus Disposal of the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Helped write and edit the document, which featured recommendations on how to enhance “Institutional Infrastructure” (rule of law, corporate governance, etc.) and was sent to policy makers, academics and key members and leaders of bilateral and multilateral development agencies and institutions.

Edited academic essays compiled in a book on the implications of European Union enlargement entitled, Challenges: The EU on the Cusp of Enlargement, and produced extensive annex featuring economic and political data appearing in the publication.

Helped organize Middle East peace conference in Toledo, Spain featuring European, Israeli, and Palestinian leaders and scholars.

Collaborated on extensive inter-agency review of export controls with staff members from various government agencies, such as the CIA and State and Treasury Departments, to determine adherence of the laws vis-à-vis shipment of “dual use” goods—items that have commercial as well as military applications—by a variety of government export promotion entities. Efforts culminated in the production and submission of detailed report to Congress.
