CQC Field Concrete and Soils Technician: Portsmouth Bypass is a four-lane, divided, limited-access highway around the City of Portsmouth in Scioto County, Ohio. The highway, to be designated State Route 823 (SR 823), is known as the Portsmouth Bypass and will comprise 16 miles of four-lane divided highway, bypassing approximately 26 miles of US 52 and US 23 through Portsmouth. It is the largest project in ODOT history. The estimated cost of construction is $634 million and is being funded as the states' first Private Public Partnership as a Design Build Finance Operate Maintain contract. Construction began in June of 2015 and was completed in December of 2018.
Specific tasks include:
QC duties included performance of compaction inspection of soil and shot rock fills, as well as inspections during clearing/grubbing and embankment.
Inspected foundation systems for confirmation of proper installation, including driven steel piles, pre-bored piles, and shallow foundations, inspecting for soil bearing capacity and cleanliness.
Performed sampling and testing of fresh concrete, testing for temperature, slump, air content, unit weight, and casting strength specimens. This includes concrete placements for bridge structures, including abutment walls, pier caps, column piers, and bridge decks. Sampling has been performed at the truck chute as well as end of the pump hose and results compared. Prior to sampling and testing.
Performed structure inspections of the reinforcing steel placement and formwork to confirm placement is per plan.
Reported daily to management, project partners and customers to ensure clear and consistent communication.
